| | Bobby Hutcherson Wise One CD (2009)
Pulse Brothers
$15.05 Unlike Bobby Hutcherson's previous super mellow effort For Sentimental Reasons, this recording is charged with increased energy and vitality, inspired by the music of John Coltrane. Hutcherson plays the part of Coltrane's tenor and soprano sax with his vibraphone quite tastefully, while guitarist Anthony Wilson adds a new chordal dimension to the music far different than a woodwind instrument. Pianist Joe Gilman is perfectly matched with his bandmates, a supple, inventive, yet forceful musician who lends great depth to the background, or in tandem with the lead instruments. California drummer and longtime confrčre of Hutcherson Eddie Marshall plays as well as ever, while bassist Glenn Richman is the much lesser known but able fifth wheel. The leader is as familiar as anyone with this music, being a survivor of the turbulent '60s jazz scene, where he was in the midst of helping change the music. Here he adds extraordinary taste and precision to these originals of Coltrane's, and standards the saxophonist made his own. Perhaps the most beautiful ...

As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts, sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, ...
| | George Winston Autumn CD (1980) Windham Hill 20th Anniversary Edition
Pulse Brothers
$8.89 Principally recorded on June 19-20, 1980. Includes liner notes by George Winston.
AUTUMN was superstar new age pianist George Winston's first album to sell more than 1,000,000 copies. Listening to these spare, emotionally rich pieces, it's easy to understand why. But it's also clear what sets Winston apart from the hordes of other new age piano soloists: an insistent--occasionally even jarring--gothic sensibility that informs his music.

| | Saint Etienne Good Humor CD (1998)
Pulse Brothers
$9.89 GOOD HUMOR contains a bonus CD that is limited to the first 10,000 copies.
St. Etienne's fourth album, GOOD HUMOR, abandons the dance elements of earlier releases to focus on the ultra-melodic Bacharach/Wilson/Beatles pop that has always been at the root of the band's music. The record sounds swoon-inducingly gorgeous. Leslied keyboards, vibes, and real strings and horns color Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs' arrangements. Sarah Cracknell's underrated voice, always the band's strongest feature, has matured into a fine instrument pitched somewhere between Dusty Springfield's soulful English Rose and Petula Clark's young sophisticate.
The achingly lovely "Erica America" is the immediate highlight, though the near-conversational "Mr. Donut" comes very close. The groovier "Sylvie" and "The Bad Postman" recall earlier club hits but with a lighter touch. All 11 songs, from "Woodcabin" to "Dutch TV," are frothy, melodic, and magnificent pop. GOOD HUMOR is one of the best albums of 1998. Original US copies included a bonus disc of singles and remixes.
Saint Etienne: Sarah Cracknell (vocals, percussion); Bob Stanley, Pete Wiggs (keyboards, synthesizers).

| | Lenny McDaniel Tired Angels CD (1998)
Pulse Brothers
$17.69 Lenny McDaniel has come full circle. After 12 years working in Los Angeles with the likes of Stephen Stills, Dwight Yoakam, Dr. John, and John Mayall, he has established himself as one of the most compelling singer/song writers and instrumentalists in his native New Orleans, the city famous for rhythm and blues, jazz and gospel. Tired Angels, his third solo CD, is an exuberant, finely crafted collection of songs, featuring McDaniel's vocals, guitar and piano work with bassist Doug Therrien and drummers Allyn Robinson and Mike Barras. Therrien and Robinson have worked together for several years backing blues guitarist Tab Benoit, and lock into a mean groove effortlessly. Robinson is an old, pre-L.A. cohort of McDaniel's, having worked with some of his early New Orleans bands as well as such notables as Luther Kent, and he was a member of Wayne Cochran's C.C. Riders when Jaco Pastorious held the bass chair.Barras frequently backs McDaniel as part of his current live band, and has worked with the contemporary blues group Stavin' Chain and the rock band Beaten Path. Backup vocals were contributed by Beth McKee, ...
