| | Cerrone's Paradise CD - Import Cerrone Discography of CDs
Over the years, the sophomore curse has plagued many talented artists, who showed considerable promise on their debut albums but failed to make good on that promise when they recorded their second albums. Gratefully, that wasn't a problem for Cerrone, whose sophomore album, Cerrone's Paradise, only strengthened his reputation in the Euro-disco field. This 1977 outing is similar to Cerrone's 1976 debut, Love in C Minor, but without sounding like musical recycling. On the original LP version of this album, the 16 minute title song took up all of side one, just as Love in C Minor's first side was devoted entirely to its title song. But "Cerrone's Paradise" is a fine orchestral Euro-disco work in its own right, and the slick but funky piece is far from a carbon copy of "Love in C Minor." Euro-disco fans also found a lot to admire about "Take Me" and "Time for Love," the songs that Cerrone co-wrote for side two of the original Cerrone's Paradise LP. While the exuberant "Take Me" was a club favorite, "Time for Love" is an unexpected quiet storm/R&B slow jam. Unexpected because the fans Cerrone acquired with Love in C Minor assumed that everything on his second album would be aimed at the dance floor. Today, Cerrone's Euro-disco arrangements sound extremely dated, after only a few notes, one can easily tell that Cerrone's Paradise was recorded in the late '70s. But then, dated isn't necessarily a bad thing, if you hold a particular era in high regard, dated can actually be a good thing. And for those who hold the disco era in high regard, Cerrone's Paradise is among the classics of its time. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Marc Almond Tenement Symphony CD (1991) (Import) Netherlands
Cerrone's Paradise CD music
$9.39 Marc Almond's newest label jump resulted in what looked like an ideal creation on paper -- two songs produced and co-written by the Grid, the techno duo featuring Almond's Soft Cell collaborator Dave Ball, three more songs worked on with sole surviving Willing Sinner/La Magia member, keyboardist/orchestrator Billy McGee, and a mini-song cycle, "The Tenement Symphony" itself, produced by uber-studio wizard Trevor Horn. But did it work? Much like Enchanted, there's a little too much of Almond getting lost in rote synth-disco for comfort at points. But there are enough pluses to outweigh the minuses -- the opening "Meet Me in My Dream," one of the Grid collaborations, is a beautiful start, equal to "The Stars We Are," while the Symphony itself, though perhaps taking itself a bit too seriously as a conceit, has three solid singles to its credit -- a completely over the top (but what else to expect from Trevor Horn?) version of Jacques Brel's "Jacky," the concluding "My Hand Over My Heart," another sweep of the heartstrings dance ballad, and the surprise U.K. hit single of the bunch, the gentle and (for Horn) understated "The Days of Pearly Spencer," another '60s cover given the Almond treatment to good effect. ~ Ned Raggett

"Fly Away Home" is probably the best rock number here, and also has room for some very pretty noodling on the mandolin. ~ Bruce Eder

| | Wild Cherry Super Hits CD (2002) Bonus Tracks; Japan
Cerrone's Paradise songs
$26.39 "Play That Funky Music" is the highlight of this compilation from American '70s funk band Wild Cherry.
This 2002 compilation shuffles most of Wild Cherry's charting hits and combines them with a larger number of album cuts. "Play That Funky Music," along with the other singles that almost no one remembers -- "Hot to Trot," "Hold On," "I Love My Music" -- are included. "Baby Don't You Know," the mildly successful "Play That Funky Music" sound-alike that became the group's second hit, is not. Everything the group did was unfairly compared to "Play That Funky Music," so the remainder of the Wild Cherry catalog is deserving of more attention; still, this disc will be more than enough for most casual fans of disco and funk. ~ Andy Kellman

Cerrone's Paradise album
$20.95 Alicia Keys won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best New Artist. SONGS IN A MINOR won the 2002 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album. "Fallin'" won the 2002 Grammy Awards for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and for Best R&B Song.
The Hong Kong import edition includes a bonus disc of remixes and live material; 30 tracks total.
Picture Roberta Flack with hip-hop trimmings or D'Angelo coming at the world from a female perspective and you get an idea of the immense talent welling up from musical prodigy Alicia Keys. Blessed with a soulful voice, mature-beyond-her-years songwriting, and a classically trained command of piano, it's no wonder music mogul Clive Davis brought the 20-year old performer over from Arista as one of the flagship artists for his new label J Records. Keys displays impressive range on this primarily self-penned debut that finds her taking part in arranging and/or production on every cut, once again redeeming Davis's instincts.
Besides the well-earned buzz for the gripping love-and-loathe single "Fallin'," Keys earns high marks for fusing rap beats and vintage Aretha on a confidently delivered cover of Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me." Elsewhere, the native New Yorker's flow finds her traversing the same ground as early-'70s Stevie Wonder on the thought-provoking "The Life," while "Goodbye" proves to be the quintessential Quiet Storm kiss-off. Keys wraps up SONGS with a sanctified mix of stride piano, lush strings, and gospel-flavored back-up singers on "Lovin' U."
2002 limited edition of 2001 album comes with a bonus disc featuring remixes & live material. Bonus CD tracklisting, 'Girlfriend' (Remix), 'Gangsta Lovin' W/ Eve, 'Fallin' (Remix W/ Busta Rhymes), 'A Woman's Worth' (Remix), 'Butterflyz' (Remix), 'How Come You Don't Call Me' (Neptune's Remix), 'Troubles' (Remix), 'Fallin' (Ali Soundtrack Version), 'Live Segment' ...
