Chain Reaction CD music
$14.30 Rush is no stranger to best-of compilation albums, they've released a slew of them. They are also no stranger to DVDs. To mark their 35th anniversary, they've released Working Men, which is both; it marks their first best-of live compilation exclusively from the DVD sets Rush in Rio (2003), R30 (2005), and Snakes & Arrows Live (2008). There is also an unreleased cut from R30 -- a killer version of One Little Victory. While fans may simply regard this as a record company cash grab, hardcore fans know how closely Rush monitors each release and controls all aspects of their career. On hearing these tracks without benefit of the visuals, it becomes lucidly clear that in the 21st century, Rush plays more like a hungry act looking to prove themselves rather than as seasoned veterans jaded by the entire business. The instrumental interaction between Neal Peart, Alex Lifeson, and Geddy Lee is utterly uncanny, the anticipation and the willingness to add flourishes and to challenge one another in the bridges and solo sections reveal their command of the material and their empathies for one another's playing strengths. One of the more revealing things on a live record such as this one is the sophistication in Lee's vocal delivery now that his singing voice has deepened ...
| | Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention Roxy & Elsewhere CD (1974) Remastered
Chain Reaction music CDs
$7.25 Pricipally recorded live at The Roxy, Hollywood, California from December 10-12, 1973; the Auditorium Theater, Chicago, Illinois in 1974; Edinboro State College, Edinboro, Pennsylvania on May 8, 1974.
It's no secret that one of the most powerful weapons in Zappa's arsenal was his sense of humor, which was at its height in live performance. Consequently, there's no better way to get a feel for the full scope of Zappa's music than on the live ROXY & ELSEWHERE. This set finds Frank at his mid-'70s peak, working with Ruth Underwood, Don Preston, George Duke, etc. While all the tunes are technically impeccable (often featuring trademark feats of counter-intuitive derring-do), it's Zappa's humorous interaction with the band and the audience that puts the real spark into this recording.

| | Megadeth Endgame CD (2009)
Chain Reaction album
$15.65 The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet, 12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass. The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than ...

| | John Cale Black Acetate CD (2005)
Chain Reaction album
$12.89 The former Velvet Underground keyboardist/violist and legendary record producer ("Patti Smith-Horses", "The Modern Lovers", "The Stooges" debut) delivers his second album for EMI. This time around, the master has truly outdone himself with one of the most cutting edge albums to arrive on the market. The first thing to hit the listener is the sonic excellence of the recording, as each track reveals an aural wonder! Cale has called on every artistic instinct from deep within his soul to create what may well be the defining album of his career. The songs defy categorization; you'll hear hard Rock, a tender ballad, hip hop inspired grooves ("Hush"), avant-garde sounds...all with melodies written by someone who really understands how to use poetry to effect and the tools of a modern studio. He credits inspiration from Dr. Dre, Pharrell (of The Neptunes), Erykah Badu, Gorillaz, Doves, Curtis Mayfield and beyond.
In 2005 John Cale returned from a self-imposed, nearly ten-year exile from pop/rock with the well-received HoboSapiens. The relatively short period it took to follow that album with this one therefore heralds a full-blown revival for the ex-Velvet Underground founding member. Cale approaches this album differently though. Where the previous work found him immersed in Pro Tools, Black Acetate is a more traditional if just as insular project. Joining Cale is Herb Graham, Jr., a multi-instrumentalist and co-producer who contributes to nearly every track and seems to be as integral to the songs as Cale himself. A few guests drop by to add textures such as cello and backing vocals, but generally this is a two-person album. As such, its production is lean, mean, taut, and as straightforward as Cale has been in a decade. Thick, grungy, often sludgy guitars dominate the claustrophobic landscape, yet the approach is tempered by Cale's superb sense of dynamics. He interrupts the chords of "Woman" to add distorted vocals that alter the doomy mood without lightening it. The straight-ahead rocker "Turn the Lights On" shifts on a hard rock riff that is simplistic but not facile. At 63, Cale's dusky, ...

Chain Reaction songs
$16.79 VESPERTINE was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Album.
This is a DualDisc, which contains a CD on one side of the disc and a DVD on the other.
Bjork's first non-soundtrack album since HOMOGENIC is positively pastoral compared with that release's experimental electronic textures. Swathed in strings and laced with beautiful choral arrangements, VESPERTINE has more in common with SELMASONGS, echoing that DANCER IN THE DARK soundtrack album's meandering melody lines, while smoothing out and adding an ethereal sheen to the more angular approaches of the singer's previous work.
Here the idiosyncratic Icelander lets loose with her full range of vocal stylings, ...
