The secret to Rebecca Kilgore's success is very simple: Her vocals are unpretentious but always swing effortlessly, whether she's performing a familiar standard or a forgotten chestnut. Accompanied by Dave Frishberg -- a talented yet underrated veteran pianist with whom she has collaborated many times on record, at jazz parties and in recurring guest appearances on the National Public Radio program Fresh Air -- they delight their audience with this live set taped in 1997 at the Heathman Hotel in Portland, OR. Another of Kilgore's strengths is her restoration of often-omitted verses, which aren't filler but set up a song as the composer intended. Although many of the songs in this collection are familiar, most of them had fallen out of favor with jazz artists by the dawn of the 21st century, though the duo's imaginative treatment of each song, while never losing the essence of each melody, shows why each composition has stood the test of time very well indeed. A listener may get the feeling that he or she is an audience of one, receiving the performers' undivided attention, a mood which is only interrupted briefly with the applause heard in between numbers. Her playful interpretation of "Everything Happens to Me" and revival of the long-lost gem by Johnny Mercer, "Not Mine," are among the many highlights of this very enjoyable evening. ~ Ken Dryden

Starlit Hour songs
$13.25 Ruby Braff was 75 years old and terrorists had just destroyed the World Trade Center when this session was recorded in New York on September 12, 2001. Those two facts could reasonably have been expected to put the kibosh on the recording project -- but for one thing, age seems to have no effect on Braff, and for another, he and drummer Jake Hanna weren't going to be able to go anywhere anyway. Pianist Dick Hyman was there already and they were able to get guitarist Howard Alden into Manhattan from his apartment in Hoboken to substitute for Bucky Pizzarelli, so they went ahead with what was initially a somber (and bass-less) session. Amazingly, there is nothing heavy or dark about the music recorded here, though it is intense. Braff plays, it almost seems, as if reviewing his life: The New Orleans-y smears and the sly Charlie Parker quotes are reflective if not nostalgic, though there is a distinct lack of sentimentality in the way he gently forces the swing on ...
| | Warren Vache Dream Dancing CD (2004)
Starlit Hour album
$13.99 Warren Vaché works magic on the cornet, an instrument that has somewhat unjustly fallen out of favor compared to the trumpet or flügelhorn. Vaché, who is joined by the brilliant pianist Bill Charlap along with the solid rhythm of bassist Dennis Irwin and drummer Eddie Locke, kicks off the CD with a terrific talkative muted solo in "Close Your Eyes." He's on open horn, backed by Charlap's lush chords, in a lyrical take of "Too Late Now." The easygoing rendition of Charlie Parker's "Quasimodo" (based on the chord changes to the standard "Embraceable You") ...

| | Buju Banton Early Years (90-95) CD (2001)
Starlit Hour songs
$9.69 Or more accurately "Buju Banton: The Penthouse Years," for this compilation rounds up a robust crop of singles all cut at Penthouse studio. Obviously then, much of this compilation was overseen by Penthouse label head Donovan Germain himself or by his protégé, Dave Kelly, with another student, Bobby Digital, putting a hand in, while a Sly Dunbar production and a Winston Riley one complete this fulsome set. Banton's breakout year in Jamaica was 1991, and from that date on the hits flooded out nonstop. Even the uproar that followed the release of the homophobic "Boom Bye Bye" in 1992 barely stemmed the tide. The following year, the DJ inked a deal with Mercury and unleashed Voice of Jamaica in the States, but it was his switch to culture with 1995's 'Til Shiloh that opened the door to a wider public. That shift in direction was heralded by Banton's 1993 masterpiece, "Murderer," but you'd never note that change from this set, which doesn't contain a single cultural track ...
