Val Kilmer stars as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's electrifying profile of the Doors, which takes the group from its inception to its demise with the death of the "Lizard King" in a Paris hotel room in 1971. In the early days of the group's formation, Morrison is at his most benign; he's just a guy hanging out at the beach writing poetry. But soon the Doors' fame begins to spread--with Morrison as the focus of attention. Capable of an eerily correct vocal imitation of Morrison, Kilmer makes manifest the talent and charisma, as well as the confusion and despair, of the complex man who was the focal point of the group. As Morrisson's drug consumption and erratic behavior increase exponentially, the rest of the band--Ray Manzarek (Kyle McLachalan), John Densmore (Kevin Dillon), and Robby Krieger (Frank Whaley)--begins to grow tired of his late arrivals, the increasing number of cancellations, and the drunken recording sessions requiring infinite retakes. But no one can help Morrison as he spirals downward into an inferno of drugs, alcohol, public obscenity, and depression, bringing the music to an untimely close.
Stone's intimate familiarity with SoCal in the 1960s provides the film with a high degree of surface verisimilitude, though the film is as much a tribute to the enduring power of the Doors' music as it is a cautionary tale about the perils of both celebrity and substance abuse. Theatrical release date: March 1, 1991.
Oliver Stone makes a cameo appearance as a UCLA film professor.
Doors drummer John Densmore appears as a recording engineer.
The rock group took their name from British author Aldous Huxley's book THE DOORS OF PERCEPTION.
In 2000 the surviving band members teamed with a variety of singers to rerecord some of the Doors' biggest hits.
In one scene of the film, Jim Morrison goes to a party at Andy Warhol's factory. Warhol is standing in front of a Roy Lichtenstein painting, and "Heroin" by Nico plays in the background.
In the film, Morrison is depicted acting out at a Miami concert, where he shouts obscenities and makes lude gestures at the audience. Also in the film, when the band performs "Light My Fire" on the Ed Sullivan show, Morrison makes a point of singing the controversial lyric "...girl we couldn't get much higher..." Doors Reviews: "...THE DOORS is a thrilling spectacle - the KING KONG of rock movies..."
-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone "...Clamorous, reverential, much-larger-than-life....Kilmer captures all of Morrisons's reckless, insinuating appeal..."
-- Janet Maslin, New York Times "...The whole movie is white hot, lapped in honeyed golds, evilly blue and black or drenched in those swoony, fiery reds. THE DOORS blasts your ears and scorches your eyes..."
-- Michael Wilmington, Los Angeles Times "...Val Kilmer is an authentic lead and Meg Ryan supplies credible support as his tortured soulmate..."

Doors Movie Review Average Rating: (3.8 out of 5 stars) MOVIE MAGIC and ....WEIRDNESS a triumph for both OLIVER STONE and VAL KILMER. the movie makes you feel like YOU ARE on some kind of a trip. STONE uses some rather unique camera angles and combined with moving backgrounds it creates an almost surreal environment. Kilmer is JIM. no doubt about it. He has his all of the traits, speech and body movement that is so authentic to JIM"S that it is almost scary. Let's not forget the supporting cast who were actually coached by the surviving members of the group.in a word...AMAZING. very accurate story and will go down as one of the best docu-drama's ever from a musical group. too long, too boring This movie does a great job of portraying Morrison's wild life but it's just the same scenes over and over. None of the events that the movie covers seem to be that important to the storyline and i think much of it could have been left out. Not recommended unless you're a die hard Doors fan... | | Reservoir Dogs DVD (1992) Anniversary Edition; Special Edition
Doors video
$10.29 Former video store clerk Quentin Tarantino's directorial debut, RESERVOIR DOGS, is a brutally funny, supercharged introduction to his supremely distinct cinematic vision, which was later to become one of the most mimicked styles of the 1990s. Mastermind Joe Cabot (Lawrence Tierney) assembles a crew of top-notch criminals to pull off a jewelry store heist. As the film opens it becomes immediately clear that the plan backfired, forcing the survivors, who have gathered at an abandoned warehouse, to figure out if one of them is, in fact, a police informer. The crew--Mr. White (Harvey Keitel), an aged veteran; Mr. Orange (Tim Roth), a wounded newcomer; Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen), a psychopathic parolee; Mr. Pink (Steve Buscemi), a bickering weasel; and Nice Guy Eddie (Chris Penn), Joe's son--begin to unravel as the pressure becomes too much for them to handle. When Joe arrives, the truth becomes clear in a vicious Mexican standoff.
Tarantino takes liberally from Hong Kong action flicks, most notably Ringo Lam's CITY ON FIRE, but his ultra-hip ‘70s soundtrack and hysterical pop culture dialogue make the film seem wholly original and new. Taking a cue from the French New Wave--most notably Jean-Luc Godard--RESERVOIR DOGS remains one of the decade's most influential motion pictures.

| | Severe Injuries DVD (2003)
Doors DVD
$13.49 An indie horror film with an edge, SEVERE INJURIES marks Amy Lynn Best's feature directorial debut. Best is a triple threat as lead actress, director, and producer, building on her experience directing, producing and starring in low-budget horror films with husband and collaborator Mike Watt. Fans of 1980s slasher films will find much humor in this film, which makes references to slasher classics like FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 4 and SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE. Adding a subversive twist to the exploitative male-dominated horror genre, Best's film pokes fun at the film's central villain. Melvin Hubble is the youngest in a long lineage of incompetent serial killers. Trying to grant his father's dying wish, Melvin finds his way into a sorority house on the night of a big bash, but fails to terrorize the girls, as they are completely unfazed by his presence. Though Melvin and the girls don't know it, he is in for some competition, as there is another killer on the loose. Best exhibits a good sense of comic timing in this parody of the fun, but inherently misogynistic horror genre.

$8.79 It's nature vs. nurture as Reagan steals a chimp to prove to his would-be father-in-law that love and a proper upbringing can improve on one's genetic inheritance. Though he provides love and understanding, the chimp unleashes no end of havoc. Perfectly good fun (though somewhat unsettling seeing the future commander in chief nursemaid to a chimp) directed by long-time Tonight Show producer De Cordova.

| | Bullitt DVDs (1968) Widescreen; Dubbed; Special Edition; Subtitled
Doors video
$23.89 In one of his most memorable roles, Steve McQueen stars as Detective Frank Bullitt, a hard-driving, tough-as-nails San Francisco cop. Bullitt has just received what sounds like a routine assignment: keep a star witness out of sight and out of danger for 48 hours, then deliver him to the courtroom on Monday morning. But before the night is out, the witness will lie dying of shotgun wounds, and Bullitt, a no-glitter, all-guts cop, won't rest until he nabs the gunmen and the elusive underworld kingpin who hired them.
From opening shot to closing shootout, Peter Yates's edge-of-the seat thriller is packed with authentic touches, from on-location San Francisco filming and believably crisp dialogue to uncompromisingly detailed police, hospital, and morgue procedures. The most memorable scene is BULLITT's celebrated car chase. McQueen, an expert automobile and motorcycle racer, does his own stunt driving as he propels his high-performance Mustang GT around and over San Francisco's fabled hills at speeds up to 115 miles an hour. The film is based on Robert L. Pike's book, MUTE WITNESS.

| | Psycho Killers DVD (1961)
Doors film
$7.69 With their chillingly absent humanity, psycho killers wield a particular terror but perennial fascination in the world of modern horror cinema. This collection presents a trio of films revolving around those endlessly horrifying psychotic murderers and serial killers: in WES CRAVEN'S CHILLER (1985), a cryogenically frozen corporate executive returns to the living--without his soul; BLOODLUST (1961) stars a pre-BRADY BUNCH Robert Reed in a takeoff on THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME as an unhinged millionaire hunts teenage victims with a crossbow on his private island; and in KISS THE GIRLS GOODBYE (1997), a psycho suspends his usual killing sprees in order to spend more time subjecting nubile teenage girls to assorted torture rituals.
This DVD, featuring a hologram cover, features 3 films: Wes Craven's Chiller, Bloodlust, and Kiss the Girls Goodbye. Also included are trivia, special features, and more.
