Spencer Tracy and Frederic March go head-to-head as opposing attorneys in this blistering courtroom drama about the famed "Scopes Monkey Trial" where a Tennessee teacher must defend himself for teaching Darwinism. This gripping adaptation of the Jerome Lawrence-Robert E. Lee play examines an issue that still causes great controversy: the role religion should play in the schools.
Bertram T. Cates is arrested and put on trial for teaching Darwin's theory of evolution in his classroom. The incident causes a furor in the religious southern community he lives in and Matthew Harrison Brady, a famous fundamentalist attorney, arrives to prosecute the young teacher. Luckily for Cates, the equally-acclaimed lawyer Henry Drummond agrees to defend him.
As a result, the two master attorneys square off in the courtroom while the teacher's life hangs in the balance. A teacher is jailed for teaching evolution in the South bringing two legal giants, one an athiest and one a creationist, to battle for more than the teacher's fate in a sweltering southern courtroom. This first rate drama was based on the real "Scopes Trial" in which Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant were the attorneys. Gene Kelly plays H.L. Mencken. Academy Award Nominations: 4, including Best Actor--Spencer Tracy, Best (Adapted) Screenplay. Florence Eldridge, who plays Fredric March's devoted wife in the film, was the actor's real-life wife. This was the seventh movie they appeared in together.
The film and the play it was adapted from were based on the real-life 1925 Scopes Monkey Trial that took place in Dayton, Tennessee. Henry Drummond, Matthew Harrison Brady, reporter E. K. Hornbeck and teacher Bertram T. Cates were modeled after Clarence Darrow, William Jennings Bryan, Baltimore reporter H. L. Mencken and teacher John T. Scopes, respectively. The trial was labeled the "Monkey Trial" by some of the country's newspapers because of the concept of evolution which was at issue.
Screenwriter Nathan E. Douglas also goes by the name Nedrick Young.
A Lomitas production.
The film was remade for TV in 1988, with Kirk Douglas and Jason Robards in the Fredric March and Spencer Tracy roles.
The play "Inherit the Wind" was produced and directed on stage by Herman Shumlin. Inherit The Wind Movie Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) The answer is in Genesis!! This most dramatic movie centres around the question of "Creation"! Did God create the universe or Darwin's theory of evolution is the true one? If
Adam and Eve were the first humanes on Earth, then where did Caine find a wife??!! But if you read the book of Genesis carefully you can find the answer there!! God did create humanes before Adam and Eve, but they were not dwelling in the Garden of Eden!! Fredric March could not reply to this question, and for some strange reason the writer(s) of the screenplay ignored it, and thus the teacher was acquitted!!!! Yup...Superb! This is one of my all time favorites and I never get tired of watching it. In my opinion, it's rare to see performances finer than those displayed by Spencer Tracy and Fredric March in this movie. These performances are "perfect". The supporting cast is excellent. Superb acting is worth the price of admission. With powerhouses like Spencer Tracy, Fredric March and Gene Kelly, you can’t miss. The courtroom confrontations between Tracy and March will keep you riveted to your seat in this intense drama. No special effects in this movie. Just a lot of incredible acting from the above three as well as the supporting cast. Made during the time when actors could act and directors knew how to direct, this movie is unbelievably realistic. Has all the intensity of “The Grapes Of Wrath” and then some. If you like dramas from Hollywood’s Golden Era and you like them hot, look no further.

$10.55 Sidney Lumet's directorial debut is a snapshot of the American judicial system in action. Twelve average New York males convene in a very small jury room on a very hot day in order to reach a verdict in a murder trial. Almost everyone wants to vote guilty and get on with their lives except for Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda), a conscientious citizen who insists on establishing reasonable doubt. Arguments are made, cigarettes are smoked, murder weapons examined, diagrams ...

$9.69 Beginning with a documentary style that immediately hooks the viewer, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, based on the Harry Bates short story "Farewell to the Master," becomes as much a human interest story as it does a sci-fi B-movie classic. The film soberly depicts the arrival of an alien dignitary, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), who has come to earth with his deadly robot, Gort (Lock Martin), to deliver the message that earthlings must stop warring among themselves--or else. After being shot at by ignorant, panicky military guards, Klaatu is brought to a Washington, D.C., hospital, where he begs a sympathetic but frank Major White (Robert Osterloh) to gather all the world's leaders so he can ...

$9.69 John Ford's memorable screen version of John Steinbeck's epic novel of the Great Depression--often regarded as the director's best film--stars Henry Fonda as Tom Joad. After having served a brief prison sentence for manslaughter, Joad arrives at his family's Oklahoma farm only to find it abandoned. Muley (John Qualen), a neighbor now nearly mad with grief, tells Tom of the drought that has transformed the farmland of Oklahoma into a desert and of the preying land agents who have plowed under the shacks of the sharecroppers. Joined by former hellfire preacher Casy (John Carradine), Tom finds his extended family, including Pa (Charles Grapewin) and his indomitable Ma (Jane Darwell), ...

Cowritten by Gilliam, playwright Tom Stoppard, and Charles McKeown, the cult-favorite film is set in a futuristic society laden with red tape and bureaucracy.
