Atlanta rookie T.I. wants to be taken seriously, but after listening to the first couple of tracks on his debut album, it's hard to do that. The young rapper is filled with so much bluster and confidence that it's hard to take him at face value. I'm Serious is, after all, his first album, and he has the audacity to call himself the king of the South. Despite all the bravado, T.I. still has plenty of lyrical ability and uses it to chronicle his ability to get women ("The Hotel") and to dump women ("I Can't Be Your Man"). He also shows a more sensitive side on the track "I Still Ain't Forgave Myself." Production-wise, I'm Serious doles out plenty of typical Southern-fried funk, with the Neptunes producing one of the best tracks on the album with "What's Yo Name," as well as the title track, "I'm Serious." Unfortunately, too many of the other tracks sound the same and a few are blatant rip-offs, namely "Do It," which is a note-for-note remake of Juvenile's hit "Back That Azz Up." T.I. claims to be the king of the South, but on I'm Serious he fails to show and prove. He does, however, have potential. If his talent ever matches his confidence, he may be headed for stardom. ~ Jon Azpiri The message that Atlanta rapper T.I. wants all his listeners to hear is I'M SERIOUS. Although he starts out the album with an intro alluding to his prowess as a pimp, dealer, and hustler, the album's first song finds the southern hip-hop hard case going to great pains to illuminate the life experiences that led to his current position, ultimately observing "what I am today I made myself" before delivering the killer blow that is the song's title, "still ain't forgave myself." Its a rare rapper who's willing to take that much personal responsibility for his role in society. Even though most of the other cuts on I'M SERIOUS find him reveling in that role, T.I. possesses the narrative skill, dramatic overview, and low-key delivery that allow his gangsta boasts to go down easily.

"I'm Serious" is a classic... Indeed, this album is a classic. It has been my experience that, ironically, sales of the debut albums of most rap artists who are popular now pale in comparison to later record sales. This unexplained phenomenon will likely remain just that—unexplained, but the diminutive sales and popularity of this album is no indication of its brilliance. "I'm Serious" is a classic rap album and should be in the music libraries of all rap fans. Submitted by kidney_beenz (Baqubah, Iraq) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | T I Trap Muzik CD (2003)
I'm Serious
$10.29 Fast-rising hip-hop superstar T.I. follows his massive underground hit 'In Da Streets, Parts 1 & 2' with his eagerly awaited Grand Hustle/Atlantic debut. Featuring the bouncing, head-bobbing first single, '24's'. 16 tracks. 2003.
Personnel: T.I., Eightball, MJG, Bun B, Mac Boney (rap vocals); Charles Pettaway (guitar, bass); Michael Witwer (guitar); Jazze Pha (background vocals). Producers include: Grand Hustle, San Holmes, DJ Toomp, Benny Tillman, Kanye West. Recorded at Patchwerk Studios, Atlanta, Georgia. Personnel: Jazze Pha (vocals); Craig Love, Michael Witwer, Charles Pettaway (guitar); Bosko (talk box). Audio Mixers: Dale Ramsey; Dale "Rambro" Ramsey; Daniel Romero; Manny Marraquin; Leslie Brathwaite. Recording information: Patchwerk Recordings, Atlanta, GA; PS West, Atlanta, GA. Editor: Mike Caren. Photographer: Kevin Knight. Whatever promise T.I. showed on his flawed debut is almost fully realized throughout his excellent 2003 follow-up, Trap Muzik. On the surface, Trap Muzik can be viewed as another record built on glorious superficialities, concerned with little more than material wealth, drug dealing, and champion stature. Dig beneath that surface, and you'll come to appreciate an ...
| | Lil Wayne Tha Carter CD (2004)
I'm Serious
$10.39 Personnel: Lil Wayne (rap vocals); Mannie Fresh, Baby (rap vocals). It would be easy to read too much into the title of Lil Wayne's fourth album, especially in light of a mixtape (cunningly titled The Prefix) that preceded this, which featured the MC over a handful of tracks off Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter's Black Album. The title actually refers to Lil Wayne's actual last name (hint: it isn't Wayne), in addition to referencing the apartments run by Wesley Snipes' character in New Jack City. Although much has been made about Wayne's growth and new world view, there's about as much change as you'd expect from a Southern rap star who has been in the public eye from his late teens to his twenties. Mannie Fresh's stout production is in effect as ever, and to the MC's credit, the rhymes are less measured and are all the better for it. To beat that dead horse one more time, the album is far too long and not concerned enough with the quality control, despite including more than enough bright spots to keep the followers following. At just over 79 minutes in length, it's made evident that the length would actually be just over 89 minutes if a CD could hold 90 minutes' worth of music. ~ Andy Kellman Lil' Wayne has been in the national spotlight since his days as the youngest member of the Dirty South's Hot Boys. On his fourth solo record, THA CARTER, Wayne is almost ...
| | T I Urban Legend CD (2004)
I'm Serious
$10.09 Parental Advisory.Guests:B.G., Pharrell Williams,Lil Jon,Daz+
Personnel: T.I.; Tony Love (guitar); Daz, Jazze Pha, KLC, Lil Jon, Pharrell Williams, B.G., Ciara. Audio Mixers: Chris Theis; Supa Engineer; Kevin Crouse; Phil Tan; Ray Seay; Leslie Brathwaite. Recording information: P.S. West Studios, Atlanta GA; Silent Sounds Studios, Atlanta, GAThe Orange Grove, Los; Stankonia Studios, Atlanta, GA. Photographer: Jonathan Mannion. T.I. went through big ups and big downs after the release of 2003's Trap Muzik. Right after watching two successive singles -- "24s" and "Rubber Band Man" -- become the most successful hits of his career, he was put behind bars for violating probation that resulted from a 1997 arrest on cocaine distribution and the manufacturing and distribution of a controlled substance. He received a three-year prison sentence, only to be granted a work-release program that allowed him to continue making music (he proceeded to record several albums' worth of material). Then there was the MC's surprise performance at a concert for an Atlanta radio station, where he avenged the alleged shots Lil' Flip took at him while he was incarcerated. And that hardly covers all the events that transpired during the 15 months that led to Urban Legend, the follow-up ...
| | T I King CD (2006)
I'm Serious
$11.15 Personnel: T.I. (rap vocals); Jamie Foxx, Pharrell Williams (vocals); Common, Governor, PSC, UGK, Young Buck, Young Jeezy, Young Dro (rap vocals). Scheduled to coincide with the release of his film ATL, the album KING indicates that 2006 may be the year for Southern rapper T.I. The Atlanta native had already established a strong track record with an impressive run of singles and three solid studio albums prior to the release of KING, but his 2006 effort is his most polished and consistent to date. T.I.'s delivery is fluid and drawn out, and his rhymes tackle subjects typical to the gangsta rap milieu. The musical approach on KING isn't much different from the rapper's previous releases, but it's nonetheless better, with tighter rhymes, more assured execution, and superior production. In fact, it's the latter that gives KING its gleam: T.I. is backed by expansive, innovative tracks that set the stage for the next generation of Southern rap. Released the same week as ATL, his big-screen debut, T.I.'s fourth album isn't the leap forward he's been threatening to make, but it does carry the best set of productions he has been given to work with, and it guarantees that he won't be leaving the singles charts any time soon. On a steady basis since 2003, the MC has been responsible for some of the most memorable rap singles of the decade. "24's," "T.I. vs. T.I.P.," "Rubberband Man," ...
| | T I T.I. vs. T.I.P. CD (2007)
I'm Serious
$10.15 It seems like T.I. hasn't gotten any rest since he hit it big with his sophomore release--2003's TRAP MUZIK. With an impressive array of LPs, mixtapes, countless guest spots, and enough industry legwork on his Grand Hustle label in the meantime, the self-proclaimed "King of the South" has been steadily putting in work. With the follow-up to his multi-platinum smash, KING, T.I. carries a concept, pitting one persona against the other on the fittingly titled, T.I. VS. T.I.P. Speaking alternately as the rap industry mogul who moves millions and the street-corner hustler who just can't get the hood out of him, the ATL native is smart to slyly examine this duality on his own--a dilemma that has been known to dog the most successful hip-hop artists under the umbrella epithet "sell-out." Mannie Fresh, Lil C, Just Blaze, the Runners, Keith Mack, Danja, Eminem, and Jeff Bass are among the varied contributors whose production work makes T.I.'s fifth solo LP bang. T.I. VS. T.I.P. also features cameos from an array of superstar guests including Jay-Z, Eminem, Nelly, Alfa Mega, Busta Rhymes, and Wyclef Jean. T.I. has been playing with the split-personality concept ...
