With a name like Something Corporate, this outfit set themselves up as sitting ducks for rock critics who like nothing better than leading a hapless young band to slaughter. This release wasn't as faceless as their name portended, but they did have some standard issue major-label pop/punk/alternative rock features to their approach. Singer/songwriter Andrew McMahon is the focal point on this six-song debut EP, which is often given over to the yearn-whine of fresh high-school graduates. That's especially true of "iF yoU C Jordan," which actually kicks off, "I have a story, a bitter anthem for everyone to hear, about this kid who just don't like me." Most of us have been picked on at some times in our lives, too, but do we really want to be reminded of it with such blatant posturing? Where they did differ from the pack is their emphasis on McMahon's piano, though there's plenty of modern rock guitar muscle on most of the cuts. The closer, "Walking By," largely discards the usual rock lineup for a piano-string arrangement. It made one wonder if McMahon's true forte would turn out to be as a more sensitive singer/songwriter rather than as the leader of a bratty, um, corporate rock band. ~ Richie Unterberger

$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded ...

$11.39 Album DescriptionI've wanted for a long time to create a CD of music that sustains a certain beautiful space to allow myself and anyone wishing it to flow into deep, fulfilling relaxation. A music with an earthy substance as well as an ethereal delicacy that allows one to go onto subtle healing places within and have time to let that adventure unold as it wants. I hope you will find this a space serene, capable of entertaining many repeated visits. This is one 58 minute piece.About the ArtistAlexander's previous two CDs "New Visions In Sedona" and "Dreams Of Sedona" have sold many thousands of copies and been used extensively by massage therapists, emotional therapists and in general by people in creative and sometimes stressful occupations who find in this music a clarity and inspiration. $12.65 MIKE WAS BORN JUNE 17 1958. EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT MUSIC STYLES SINCE HIS EARLY YOUTH, HIS FATHER-A LOVER OF MUSIC- WOULD PLAY EVERYTHING FROM MOTOWN TO MOZART. HIS PARENTS WERE SOMEWHAT OF MUSICIANS THEMSELVES, PLAYING ONLY FOR LEISURE. "WE HAD A CHORD ORGAN IN THE KITCHEN. IT HAD SIX CHORD BUTTONS AND A MODEST SIZED KEYBOARD. I WROTE MY FIRST SONG AT SIX YEARS OLD AND BASICALLY JUST TINKERED WITH IT FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS. ONE CHRISTMAS CAME AND I WAS 11 YEARS OLD, AND MY PARENTS GAVE ME A CHEAP ACOUSTIC GUITAR WITH A LESSON BOOK THAT CAME WITH A RECORD. I STAYED UP THAT NITE UNTIL I COULD PLAY A SONG OUT OF THE BOOK. IT WAS AN INSTANT LOVE AFFAIR. I LEARNED A FEW CHORDS AND IMMEDIATELY BEGAN PENNING SONGS. AS TIME WENT ON, I WAS EXPOSED TO BASIC MUSIC THEORY IN GRADE SCHOOL. I TOOK NOTES AND BEGAN RESEARCH INTO ENCYCLOPEDIAS AND DICTIONARIES FOR ANYTHING I COULD FIND ON THE SUBJECT OF MUSIC THEORY. I BASICALLY TAUGFHT MYSELF TO WRITE MUSIC SO I COULD WRITE MY SONGS ONTO MANUSCRIPT." OVER THE YEARS,. MIKE PICKED UP ODD INSTRUMENTS (MANDOLIN, FIFE, DRUMS, AND FINALLY ELECTRIC GUITAR)AND IN HIS LATER TEENS BEGAN TO GATHER SOME HALF DECENT EQUIPMENT. HE DID SOME MUSICAL ENDEAVORS WITH A COUPLE OF CLOSE FRIENDS OF HIS...ONE, AN ORIGINAL ROCK BAND CALLED MYSTICAL ROADS, AND ANOTHER, A ORIGINAL JAZZ/FUSION BAND CALLED TELL TALE. BOTH CASES INVOLVED STUDIO WORK. SOME OF TELL TALES STUDIO WORK LIVES ON AT WWW.MUSICSMUGGLER. COM . HIS MUSICAL TASTES AND ABILITIES BEGAN TO DEVELOPE AND PROGRESS WITH EXPERIMENTATION INVOLVING ODD TIME SIGNITURES, KEY SHIFTS, AND IN SOME CASES, AN "ANY THING GOES" APPROACH TO WRITING. HIS MUSIC RANGES FROM VERY SIMPLE POP TYPE SONGS TO VERY EXPERIMENTAL WORKS. FROM ALL OUT ELECTRIC, TO SUBTLE ACOUSTIC. HIS MUSIC STYLES COVER ROCK, PROGRESSIVE ROCK, JAZZ, FUSION, BLUES, NEW AGE, CLASSICAL, TO NAME A FEW, AND A COMBINATION OF ONE OR MORE AT ANY GIVEN TIME. A PERFECT WORLD: "I'D SAY THAT OVER THE LAST 9 MONTHS OR SO I CONSIDERED MAKING A CD (SOME DAY IN THE FUTURE WHEN I HAD THE MONEY) BUT IT WAS ALWAYS IN THE BACK OF MY MIND. OVER THE LAST 4 YEARS I PROBABLY RECORDED 50+ SONGS THAT ARE EITHER NEARLY FINISHED, HALFWAY IN THE WORKS, OR JUST STARTED. I HAVE 2 ORIGINAL PROJECTS GOING 1- "THE AGES"-A STRICTLY EXPERIMENTAL COMPILATION INVOLVING CLASSICAL, AND FUSION STYLES, AND SOME WHAT PROGRESSIVE ROCK. IT'S AN 11-13 MOVEMENT WORK IN WHICH I TRIED TO TAKE A WHOLE DIFFERENT APPROACH TO WRITING. I PULLED ONE MOVEMENT FROM THE COLLECTION-"THE EOLITHIC ERA" WHICH FEELS TO ME ALONG THE LINES OF ROUGH AND RAW FUSION, AND PUT IT ONTO "A PERFECT WORLD. IT'S THE ONLY INSTRUMENTAL TRACK ON THE CD AND I CHOSE IT FOR THE ENERGY AND GRIT IT PUTS FORTH". I HAD ANOTHER COMPILATION TITLED "RECLUSE" WHICH IS MORE A ROCK/PROGRESSIVE ROCK WORK. IT IS ALSO A MUTI-MOVEMENT WORK FROM WHICH I SELECTED 2 SONGS TO PLACE ON "A PERFECT WORLD". THEY ARE 1-"VAGABOND" AN ACOUSTIC GUITAR SONG THAT TELLS A LITTLE STORY. I USED 2 ACOUSTIC GUITARS, AN ACOUSTIC BASS GUITAR, AND A COUPLE OF SNTH TRACKS ...
