BEST MOVIE EVER This movie is the BOMB. The fighting is almost real, and all the imiges were real Submitted by Seryhawk (Montville, CT, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
What about the Canadians who died at Normandy? As is so common in Hollywood's view of Canada, Canada exists only as the "Northcountry" or a place where our cities stand in for US cities in filming.
The Longest Day falls into the first category and this is very sad, since the movie is big, important and moving in many ways.
Canada lost more men per capita than any other Allied nation in that invasion. There were five infantry divisions: two American, two British (with some Canadian troops) and one Canadian. They took Juno Beach. They were young men too; they were patriotic and many had enlisted long before the U.S entered the war.
There were plenty of great Canadian actors who could have been cast in this film (how about Christopher Plummer?).
What a shame that the movie ignored a major part of The Longest Day. Submitted by virginia (Cincinnati, Ohio) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
My Dad was there. He said it was as real as it could be made.
We saw this together in 1960.
He wasn't in the first wave but told me thats what the beach looked like.
With the TV Show Combat, you have as much realism as you can get on the screen.
TCM say: One of the Greatest Movies Ever made.
Buy it. Submitted by Vince (Tampa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful. This review is for a different format.
One of the finest American war films ever. This is perhaps the premier American WWII film, replete with stunning cinematography, engaging script, and more stars than the universe itself! Of course it focuses almost exclusively on the American forces and offers a blatanly patriotic view - because it's an AMERICAN FILM! You don't see the French or Germans making war films about Americans, because their audiences wouldn't want to see it. That's the way it should be - an American could not have crafted as amazing a work as "Downfall", which chronicled the last few days of Hitler in the bunker. This is, again, an American WWII film, and one of the finest along with Saving Private Ryan and Schindler's List. There can't be a higher recommendation than that!
