Inlakesh & Soulfood's Entering Dreamtime features remixes of songs from Wingmakers Chambers 11-17, including the hypnotic-, chant-, and digeridoo-driven opener, "Radiant Minds," which remains entrancing throughout its nearly ten-minute running time. Entering Dreamtime fuses the spacious sounds of Australia's aboriginal outback with the meditative beauty of Tibetan chants, and with the help of digeridoo masters Inlakesh, Soulfood's DJ Free turns this eclectic mix of influences into transporting music. Free's electronic atmospheres actually enhance instead of detract from the indigenous instruments featured on each piece; so many ethnic fusion albums sound cheap and tinny due to poorly chosen keyboard sounds, but the subtle synths on pieces like the remix of "Forest Gathering" work well. In keeping with the rest of Soulfood's work, Entering Dreamtime is a seamless, hypnotic blend of old and new musical textures. The disc also features some interesting multimedia content, including mp3s, a meditation primer, an introduction to the concepts of the ancient Medicine Wheel, an essay on the soul, and more. Overall, though it's technically a mini-album, Entering Dreamtime gives the listener the complete Soulfood experience. ~ Heather Phares

MAGNETIC SOUTH is Michael Nesmith's first solo record after the break-up of the Monkees.
This European two-fer CD contains Michael "Papa Nez" Nesmith's first two post-Monkees recordings -- Magnetic South and Loose Salute -- as a member of the First National Band. Although the heavily orchestrated Wichita Train Whistle Sings (1968) is credited to Nesmith as a solo artist, it was technically released while he was still a Monkee. As a bonus for collectors, this single-disc anthology also includes the instrumental track "1st National Dance." As enthusiasts of post-Headquarters Monkees will assuredly attest, Nesmith's country & western-flavored material is not only the highlight of those albums, but arguably the only worthwhile tracks on them. During his tenuous final days as a pop idol, Nesmith took full advantage of the unique situation by recording his compositions outside of the Monkees pre-manufactured confines -- using his own musicians. Several of those tracks are revisited on these recordings. Among them, "Calico Girlfriend," "Nine Times Blue," "Little Red Rider," "Crippled Lion," "Hollywood," and "Conversations" were recorded and available for potential inclusion on the last three Monkees long-players that Nesmith had any involvement in -- The Birds, the Bees & the Monkees, Instant Replay, and The Monkees Present. The First National Band featured Red O.J. Rhodes (pedal steel guitar), Glen D. Hardin (keyboards), John London (bass), and John Ware (drums). Along with Nesmith (guitar/vocals), they provided a tight yet sublimely down-home platform for Papa Nez to weave his unique brand of country-rock -- which was in its infancy ...

Always inspired, Dark Tranquility has reached yet another career milestone for the realm of melodic Swedish death metal. Gone are the rapid-paced melodies and controversial clean vocals of Michael Stanne -- opting a return to his trademark snarling vocals, albeit noticeably toned down -- enduring are the electronic elements and mid-tempo catchy song structures. In fact, all of Haven has a more polished subdued nature to it, the type that requires multiple listens to appreciate. Musically similar to Projector, the album is as ambiguous as the cover suggests. Rich electronic keyboard textures linger beneath each song, occasionally rising to crescendo and tastefully complimenting the melodic twin leads. In a curious way, the album reminds one of Samael's past few endeavors (minus the drum machine and over the top synths), at least in compositional approach. Haven is hugely original, epic, and best listened to in one musically famished sitting. Stanne's blistering Chris Barnes approach on "Fabric," the dynamically catchy opener "The Wonders at Your Feet," and the thick mid-paced rapture of "Feast of Burden" are just three of the album's memorable moments. Finally, Dark Tranquility has achieved just that -- tranquil balance, both in songwriting and musical approach, and it is all combined with a melancholic heaviness bands like In Flames or Tiamat have long forgotten. Amazing, all should hear this subtle masterpiece. ~ Jason Hundey
