| | Bebel Gilberto Tanto Tempo CD (2000)
Salsa
$13.99 Bebel Gilberto was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best New Artist. TANTO TEMPO was nominated for the 2001 Latin Grammy Award for Best Musica Popular Brasileira Album.
This is a collection of remixes from the TANTO TEMPO album. Remixers include Peter Kruder, Truby Trio, Rae & Christian, King Britt.
Bebel Gilberto is the daughter of Brazilian singer/guitarist Joao Gilberto. TANTO TEMPO, her debut release, brings a contemporary sheen to classic bossa novas. Acoustic accompaniment predominates, with the addition of occasional electronica, making this collection a perfect reflection of the late-20th century two-way street between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the American producers who covet its easy, sexy sound.
Gilberto's voice is assured and steady. As with other South American singers gaining attention in the States, such as Peru's Susana Baca, she's a model of restrained passion, her phrasing subtly and sensuously caressing her music. Gilberto sings mostly in Portuguese, but performs a few songs in English, such as the dreamy "August Day Song." "Lonely" finds her paired with Washington D.C. downtempo producers Thievery Corporation, while the classic "So Nice" is still the perfect airy, breezy hammock song. TANTO TEMPO is highly recommended for aficionados of both classic and modern Brazilian pop.
Issued the same year as Bebel Gilberto's first full-length solo album TANTO TEMPO, TANTO TEMPO REMIXES is, as the name implies, a series of remixed tracks from that debut. Bebel is the daughter of Joao Gilberto (the man who almost single-handedly popularized bossa nova), and has been singing and performing since an early age. Her ease with bossa nova ...
| | Vera Lynn Remembers CD (2002) (Import) England; France
Salsa
$10.49 Many years after the close of World War II, Vera Lynn was still singing the songs remembered by countless British servicemen and women as well as anyone else who had heard her radio program Sincerely Yours. Her voice is as clear and compassionate as ever while singing the ballads "The White Cliffs of Dover," "Yours," "There'll Always Be an England," and a medley of "When the Lights Go On Again All Over the World," "I'll Pray for You," and "We'll Meet Again." She also finds time for a few exotic specialties including "Besame Mucho" and "Lili Marlene." Unfortunately, the disc is of uncertain ...
| | Laura Pausini Resta In Ascolto CD (2004) Italian Edition
Salsa
$8.29 One linguistic myth is that anyone who speaks Spanish is automatically fluent in Italian; the languages are quite similar, but similar is by no means the same as identical. However, it is true that anyone who is fluent in Italian has a definite advantage
No stranger to success, Europop sensation Laura Pausini sold over 25 million albums in her first decade or so of recording, quite a feat for someone who was just turning 30 years old and had never broken into the lucrative English-language market. Yet she essentially struck out when she did try to cross over to that English-language market in 2002 with From the Inside. Put mildly, the album bombed stateside. Its qualities (and the qualities of stateside consumers) aside, it was the first full-fledged failure Pausini had experienced in a career of multi-million-selling albums and sold-out world tours. Here was someone who had sung for Pope John Paul II at Christmas and for Barbra Streisand at a birthday party, yet she couldn't sing for ordinary Americans, who just weren't interested in her melodramatic schmaltz. And so Pausini took a sizable break, perhaps the first of her whirlwind, world-conquering career. When she did finally emerge from her self-imposed silence, she returned with Escucha, her first Spanish-language album in four long years (not counting her best-of collection in 2001). (The album was also released in an Italian-language version, Resta in Ascolto.) Expectations were high, obviously, for she'd been gone for what felt like an eon in music years, and they were also high because of the dissatisfaction her Romance-language audience felt with her after the English-only From the Inside and its resulting mixed reception internationally. All of the tension seems to have seeped into the music of Escucha, because this is probably the ...
| | Hugh Masekela Hope CD (1994)
Salsa
$13.25 In the `60s, the South African-born trumpeter, producer, and composer Hugh Masekela played a pivotal role in introducing African music to western audiences. His albums made explicit the connection between African folk forms and African-American musical idioms like blues, jazz and soul. HOPE is a live album that captures Masekela performing in D.C. with an accomplished, all-African band in 1993. On HOPE, Masekela revisits many of the highlights of his career, including his tribute to South Africa, "Uptownship," and the strident protest number, "Mandela."
Limited Edition Japanese pressing of this album comes housed in a miniature LP sleeve. 2007.
Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington, D.C. from July 30-August 1, 1993. Includes liner notes by Hugh Masekela.

| | Black Sheep Wolf In Sheep's Clothing CD (1991)
Salsa
$8.15 Playfully satirical, witty, and incredibly imaginative, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing introduced one of the freshest talents in early-'90s rap, a self-produced duo who caught the tail end of the Native Tongues family. Though Dres and Mista Lawnge didn't match the brilliant wordplay of A Tribe Called Quest or De La Soul, their topics were well-chosen, they were presented in a hilarious context, and every song was backed up by strong productions and great rapping. A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing wasn't a comedy record, but it was difficult to tell when the duo were half-serious or half-joking, especially since they were often the objects of their jokes. They poked fun at many aspects of black music and culture of the early '90s, everything from the persuasive gangster mentality ("U Mean I'm Not"), obsessions over the Afrocentric viewpoint ("Are You Mad?"), and lewd sex raps ("La Menage"), as well as an amusingly incorrect response to feminism ("L.A.S.M."). They also dropped a few of the best hip-hop club tracks of the era, the insanely catchy items "The Choice Is Yours (Revisited)," "Try Counting Sheep," and "Flavor of the Month." (Another smooth dance tune, "Strobelite Honey," was dreadfully honest about girls who look better under the lights than upon closer inspection.) Polar opposites to the ranks of somber political rappers, and deftly counteracting the indulgence and self-seriousness of many alternative groups, ...
