Alto and guitar duets are not exactly common, making this set by Gary Bartz (who doubles on soprano) and guitarist Peter Leitch a special event. The duo really stretches out, performing a trio of two-song medleys that clock in over 15 minutes apiece (with "The Touch of Your Lips" and "But Not for Me" being nearly 21 and a half minutes) plus briefer versions of Leitch's "Some Other Samba" and Bartz's "Uncle Bubba." The two musicians play solo sections but mostly interact with each other, getting adventurous in spots (the format itself is adventurous) yet always keeping the melodies in mind. This is a CD full of sparks and subtle surprises that rewards repeated listenings. ~ Scott Yanow
Personnel: Gary Bartz (soprano & alto saxophone); Peter Leitch (guitar).

Montreal Concert album
$6.25 With BIRTH OF THE COOL, Miles Davis distilled a new tonal palette for jazz. As early as 1954, Miles reacted to the escalating chordal complexity of hard bop by fashioning an evocative blues based on a simple scalar pattern ("Swing Spring"). KIND OF BLUE was the ultimate fulfillment of this approach, with Miles providing his collaborators little more than outlines for melodies and simple scales for improvisation. By emphasizing the blues and the improvisor's melodic gifts, KIND OF BLUE precipitated a major stylistic development--modal jazz.
Charles Mingus had experimented with pedal points throughout the 1950s, and the melodic freedom of Ornette Coleman's Atlantic sides was also predicated on freedom from chord changes. But KIND OF BLUE was to prove the most influential, enduring work of its kind. There was just such a vibe about these 1959 sessions--Miles' lyric genius and burgeoning stardom, the innovative voicings and rarefied touch ...

| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Montreal Concert album
$10.05 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). ...

$15.19 THE BANDThis band has been turning a lot of heads lately. You can see their video of “Rollercoaster” on Nickelodeon, hear their songs in rotation at Movie Tunes, hear “Rollercoaster” in the indie film “The Last Adam”, their single “Destiny” topped the national chart at Broadjam, and “Gimme” has become the summer anthem blasting from car stereos all over Atlanta. In their debut album SPAREchange creates an energetic blend of pop, rock, funk, and soul music. Combining the groove of Maroon 5, the energy of No Doubt, and the vocal melodies of Kelly Clarkson, this group of young, intelligent musicians creates a sound that bridges all ages and cultures. Hearing any one track of this album, it would be easy to place this group in a specific genre, but the tracks range from high energy rock, to slow ballads, to funk rock, and even to upbeat dance songs. Between the complex vocal harmonies, ripping guitar, and solid drum and bass grooves, SPAREchange will blow you away with the style, musicianship, and heart they put into their music. Once you hear it, you’ll know why they’re called a blast of fresh air. THE ALBUMThe new CD, “NO more” has ten songs that describe hope, frustration, great boyfriends, ...
