| | Elvis Presley ELV1S: 30 # 1 Hits CD (2002) Remastered
Touch: 24 Years Of Windham Hill songs
$10.39 Includes liner notes Peter Guralnick and Ernst Mikael Jorgensen.
Commemorating the 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley's death, 30 #1 HITS presents a career-spanning serving of the King's chart-toppers.
Dating back to "Heartbreak Hotel" (which was inspired by a suicide note printed in the Miami Herald), most of these cuts have become indelibly etched into the fabric of pop culture and each has a unique story behind it. "Love Me Tender" has its origins in the Civil War ballad "Aura Lee," "It's Now Or Never" found Elvis Americanizing the Neapolitan ballad "O Sole Mio," and "Wooden Heart" likewise was converted from a German children's song.
This Memphis native's choice of artists to cover was equally intriguing ...

| | Anti-Nowhere League We Are... The League CD (1982) (Import) Japan
Touch: 24 Years Of Windham Hill album
$42.05 The debut album by the U.K.'s long-running second-wave punk act, the Anti-Nowhere League, was originally released in 1982. One of the best albums from the short-lived oi! scene, WE ARE...THE LEAGUE is a stripped-down affair, all aggressive energy and lyrical spittle on genre classics like "We Will Not Remember You" and "Can't Stand Rock and Roll." In 2008, a straight vinyl reissue was released by the estimable British punk archivist label Captain Oi!, with no bonus tracks.
The years pass, the wheel of time turns, and the shocking, moral-challenging ne'er-do-wells of one generation eventually seem almost sweet when compared with those of later days. Every so often, though, something will remain almost gloriously offensive and wrong no matter what the future brings; the League's filthy gob of a debut album fulfills that brief, and then some. Musically, there's nothing here to surprise or challenge anybody -- already dated three-chord thrash, smash, and bash at the time of its release, years later it just sounds like the type of stuff folks like Offspring listened to while killing time in rehearsal studios. However, for all of the band's protestations of "being sh*t," the roar is actually reasonably produced, with a good oomph to it instead of becoming too treble. Every so often the band tries something just a tiny bit different (the slow opening to "Woman," which is almost a late-'50s tearjerker in modern leather gear before everything revs up), but mostly they just do what they do. It's ...

| | Derby Posters Fade CD (2008)
Touch: 24 Years Of Windham Hill album
$11.29 Oddly, Derby hail not from the English town of the same name but from Portland, OR; odd because their sound is so quintessentially English. On Posters Fade, their sophomore set, Derby resurrect the British Invasion -- which they are head over heels in love with -- in all its pert, melody-rich glory. And melodies -- the cheerful kind you can sing along with after the first couple of lines -- are key to this set, mostly set to rhythms that will send you hopping across the floor in delight. The first single, "All or Nothing," is a case in point: Brit-pop with a twist, as a New Order-styled rhythm courses right over a Jam-ish number. "Michigan" also has an Ordered edge, but tied to a more indie-styled song. "As My Own" goes with the indie sound, but blends it with late-'60s rock, while the title track is a glam-stomper, but hustled right back to the '60s. The Kinks are Derby's most obvious influence, with the set-opening "Why Don't You Do It" an homage to their Muswell Hillbillies period, while "Stop Stalling" pays tribute to their earlier sound. But the Beatles, too, play their ...
