Recorded live at Monroe State Prison and Washington State University, Washington, and University Of Oregon, Oregon in October 1971. Includes liner notes by Tim Schuller.

TopCat Records of Dallas, Texas has announced the release of the CD, The Blues Revue Of The 20th Century - Volume 1, culled from the Lost Tapes of a 1971 concert tour featuring blues greats Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Big Joe Turner, George "Harmonica" Smith, J.B. Hutto, and Bee Houston. The tour was managed by the late Link Wyler, Big Mama Thornton's manager at the time. Thanks to Wyler's Hollywood connections, the MCA Mobile Studio was hired on to record the audio using, at the time, state-of-the-art equipment and techniques,. The tour played Universities and prisons in Washington and Oregon with several hours of footage alone from the State Prison in Monroe, WA. Richard Chalk, president of TopCat Records, calls it "...the greatest concert film and audio collection of it's kind in existence; a goldmine of classic blues from the original Masters of the artform ." TopCat Records plans to release a series of videos and CDs to be culled from the footage, including last years' release of the Handy Award winning Muddy Waters - Lost Tapes CD on the Blind Pig label. Surely blues fans the world over will be overjoyed with this great discovery. Just to imagine Muddy Waters, Big Mama Thornton and George Smith in their prime for actual hours of never heard or seen before 'live' performances is mind-boggling and mouth- watering.

Coming from the same domain as Ryan Adams, Gram Parsons, and the Flying Burrito Brothers, this Portland, OR, group's fourth album provides a great escape from suburbia, despite the rather abrupt ending to the opening pop twang of "Winner's Casino" and "5 Degrees Below Zero." Lead singer Willy Vlautin propels the album with a voice that sounds as if it's well wet from whiskey at times, particularly during "Out of State," which is equally a cross between Jeff Tweedy and Tom Petty's more reflective moments. By far the great track within is a heartfelt "Glisan Street," a rather somber and sober look at any small town and its problems. There's also a measure of guitar feedback and distortion in places, lending itself toward Wilco on "Northline," although the song drags near the conclusion. Accompanied by pedal steel guitar, the songs are relatively tight in their arrangements despite being quite lengthy in cases. The album takes a very odd turn during the middle, with two instrumentals, one veering into experimental territory. "Patty's Retreat" would fit well on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. ~ Jason MacNeil RICHMOND FONTAINE THE GREAT ESCAPERichmond Fontaine's Winnemuccaby Nate Lippens/The Stranger"Just put my heart in gasoline," sings Willy Vlautin on "Winner's Casino," at the beginning of the heartsick road trip that is Richmond Fontaine's latest album, Winnemucca. It's unclear whether Vlautin wants immolation or the elation of the road--as it turns out 10 songs later, he wants both. It's a very old American voice speaking through the narrators of these songs. It's the same voice that Huck Finn spoke in when he said, "I can't stand it. I been there before." Wanderlust and the promise of geographical cures for romantic and spiritual loss are encoded in the noir country-rock of Portland's Richmond Fontaine. On the band's fourth album those impulses and daydreams are attached to very specific people and places: the prisoner in "Santaim" trying to sort out his life; the young man in "Northline" conflicted about his longing for a skinhead girl; Ray Thaves in "Five Degrees Below Zero," riding a Greyhound bus, headed back to live at his uncle's house in Las Vegas; and the "Winners' Casino," in the Nevada town that is the album's namesake. "Winnemucca is a place where we go when we have the money to hide out," says Vlautin. "The whole record is kind of about hiding out, finding a place that's comfortable." Most of the songs were written ...

Nominated for two 2004 W.C. Handy Awards!- Best Acoustic Blues Album- Best New Artist DebutMark Lemhouse's debut release delivers string-strangling, gut-rocking blues ecstasy. Lemhouse reaches into a wicked toolbox - containing resonator chainsaw, electric tube-amp machete, and bottleneck auger - to uproot blues tradition with a vandal's glee. Recorded to analog tape with vintage mics at Easley/McCain Studios in Memphis, Big Lonesome Radio has a gritty feel that's more akin to a Howlin' Wolf or Jimmy Reed than a young man playing ...
