Recording information: 12/2000. The members of Explosions in the Sky may just be four soft-spoken guys from Texas, but on Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever they simply tear everything apart. Combining influences from classic rock to metal to goth, the band creates instrumental soundscapes that can turn from all-out destruction to heartfelt, dreamy melodies in the blink of an eye. The result is similar to Mogwai and Godspeed You Black Emperor! -- a musical journey that leads listeners through the entire range of emotion without even needing words. "Greet Death" matches a crunchy Dinosaur Jr. hook with warm Cure-esque bass grooves. "Moon Down" chimes and twists through ten minutes of calm night, leaving the listener with the feeling that something awesome is sure to happen. On "Have You Passed Through This Night?" a film-dialogue sample ponders in a near-whispering Texas drawl the meaning of the world. What follows is like the climax of a tense, mind-blowing movie, driven by relentless guitars and a thundering Master of Puppets-era Metallica drum march. "Poor Man's Memory" follows, offering some consolation in a sentimental melody. The album ends with the grand, 12-minute-long "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept," a song that moves from Sonic Youth to Joy Division to Explosions in the Sky. Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Die, Those Who Tell the Truth Shall Live Forever is nothing short of awe-inspiring and one of the best records of 2001. ~ Charles Spano Explosions in the Sky's 2001 release offers a plethora of musical colors and fascinating detours. All six lengthy tracks are centered on moody guitar, bass, and drum textures. The result is a mix of subtle, organic tones and raucous, sometimes heavily amplified effects. Overall, the music on THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL DIE, THOSE WHO TELL THE TRUTH SHALL LIVE FOREVER is as complex, long-winded, and obtuse as the title itself. However, the sonic landscape created by this eclectic quartet is also warm and inviting. The simple catch phrase for this style of music is emo-rock, which is an abbreviation for emotional rock. Like this style implies, these compositions are expressive and intense. Whether it is the screaming guitars of "Greet Death" or the brooding "The Moon is Down," this CD writhes with great musical transparency. The finest selection on this release may be the last track, "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept." On this piece, the band uses a cornucopia of dense guitar sounds, a relentless military drum cadence, and dark chords that loop ominously. Mogwai + Godspeed! You Black Emporer = Explosions in the Sky I pretty much blind bought this album, hearing alot of good things from people about them. Was I ever suprised by it, this album is tells a story or seems to of a plane crash. It has its high points and its low. If you like Post Rock bands like Mogwai or Godspeed you Black Emporer then make sure you pick up this album. Submitted by Sepulvayne83 (Houston, Tx, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Music that shows you pictures Oh my god....the song "With Tired Eyes, Tired Minds, Tired Souls, We Slept" was the kind of song that matched every single ounce of pain I've ever had by only the first couple seconds of it.
It takes my breath away everytime I hear it.
If you see the world as bittersweet, then this is the album for you. Submitted by Loki (PA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
the greatest explosions in the sky is the best band i have ever heard of. this album is so sick the way it starts off slow and just goes loud. I just love it how its just music and no lyrics except the 4 song which is just in the start of the song. This album deserves more like 10 stars. if mogwai and godspeed had a kid This album is one of the most powerful pieces I have ever heard. If you like heavy music with out the yelling or if you just like heavy music this is a winner. To me Explosions in the sky resembles both Mogwai and Godspeed you black emperor, a cross between the two more or less but they are even better. This album is also super solid and every song uses its 6-12 minutes very well and some deserve even more if you ask me. The more silent parts only draw out the louder parts and make it seem well, climactic at the least. Its hard to belive that its only four guys because of their huge sound... In short this is a great cd and their is no way I can do it justice just by writing what I think about it. Submitted by a reviewer (Marquette, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Photographer: Alisa Anderson. Unknown Contributor Role: Emily Prince. Classically trained harpist Joanna Newsom uses her appreciation of Appalachian folk and bluegrass for an oddly alluring set of indie rock melodies. Milk-Eyed Mender, which follows her homemade EP releases Walnut Whales and Yarn and Glue, is rich in harvest colors. Newsom's childlike voice brings an unstudied grace to an innocent setting of songs, and such quirkiness is hard to find among most guitar-driven indie acts. From the more whimsical moments of "Peach, Plum, Pear" and "Inflammatory ...
