The Legendary Lee Wiley at Her All-Time Best
Regarded by many as one of the greeatest of all jazz singers and by some as the greatest, period, Lee Wiley possessed a rare combination of warmth, wit, and subtle musicality. Her voice was unique: throaty, supple, inviting, and erotic. This disk collects three short albums that she made at the height of her powers. The songs range from the lesser known ("Street of Dreams") to the standard ("Tea for Two") and to each of them she lends astonishing depth and resonance. Her rendition of "Tea for Two" invests both the melody and the lyric with a poignance no one else has ever even suspected; and in "Sugar," one of her trademark numbers, she makes love to every listener. (Forget Viagra: Lee Wiley's "Sugar" works better.) With excellent recorded sound from first to last, capturing every shade of her rich vocal coloring and devastating phrasing, this disk belongs in the collection of anyone who loves jazz singing at its very best or loves great singing no matter what the genre.
