It's tempting to imagine Richard James holed up in his basement for years on end, concocting foaming aural experiments to try out on unsuspecting listeners, and he certainly does little to dispel that image here. His past musical output has varied from the gentle but weird, to the baffling, to the ghastly, and with DRUKQS he manages to combine all the aforementioned in a compelling yet unsettling mix that is never less than fascinating. The tracks are listed on the booklet, but not necessarily in the same order they appear on the album, and moreover James seems to have developed his own language somewhere along the way, so we're left to our own devices to figure things out.
Like some demented baseball pitcher, James constantly varies his stylings, now pastoral acoustic piano, now impossibly fast breakbeat techno garage, now weird hollers from behind the basement door. He keeps the listener constantly off balance (at one point including a Stephen Hawking-like voice reading snippets of Goldilocks and the Three Bears); it's a wild, strange ride, but it's consistently fascinating to hear what comes next.
Aphex Twin is Richard D. James.

Drukqs Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews The greatest electronic album From all the feedback of the fans, and the reviews of the critics...one thing is for certain: for Analord to be made after this, he made his career something all fans will remember in this album. Truely his pinnacle right here, and to everyone of their own accord-in the scene...may be confronted in having to follow.
I own tons of electronic music: Replex, Warp, Planet Mu, Astralwerks, etc etc. There are so many greats, it would be thought unfair to ever give such a title to one musician.
The Aphex Twin was my most influential introduction, and when I see other favorites like Kid 606 on Tigerbeat6 and Venetian Snares on Planet Mu, none of it ever came so solidly, or so daunting.
Two CDs certainly makes the point of this album, from beginning to end, the work of unheard music so many saw the potential to reach. On this album is the perfection so many distort and destroy sound itself to create...and go further to find that peak in themselves.
These tracks are THE APHEX TWIN, like a book of his life...whether through audio clips of his family, or cellular noises of electronic pulses mimicing a heart...he bleeds the hell of his commitment to communicate through electronics. An art he deomonstrates, but is seen publicly, as artificial.
Yet, so many discourage the making of this album...but others will be rewarded in the uncovering of its powerful layers of influence.
