Raul Di Blasio's tribute to one of the most popular proponents of the Argentine tango is an emotional valentine to one of his musical heroes, perhaps overly respectful and just a bit too evocative for its own good. The arrangements are lush and clever, though a few have too many synthetic instruments for their own good. Di Blasio's shines on "Volver" and "Cuesta Abajo," his intricate piano figures dramatically conveying the majesty and grandeur of the tango for the modern audiences -- either overly familiar with the form, or not at all. He also invited a few guests along, including the group El Consorcoio, Michael Bolton, and Fernando de la Mora. Bolton's appearance on "El Dia Que Me Quieras" is quite good, too; he proves himself quite an adept vocalist for the tango, and his closing note on the song is simply astounding. Though the arrangements and production -- polished to a fine sheen and often missing the emotion necessary for a good tango -- tend to drag down Di Blasio's tribute to the tango, there are several fine performances present. ~ John Bush

| | Di Blasio Solo CD (1997)
Tango music CDs
$7.65 Though he was born in Argentina, has a long-term contract with BMG U.S. Latin and has sold hundreds of thousands of his first five recordings throughout Latin America while touring those regions regularly, Raul DiBlasio's acoustic piano-based music can't be pigeonholed as strictly Latin or having anything to do with true Latin jazz. Each of his recordings has a few nods to his rich heritage, to be sure, but two of DiBlasio's most popular efforts, his 1990 debut El Piano de America and 1994's Piano de America 2, incorporated a variety of his influences - from pop to classical - to create an impressive potpourri of colors he called "music connecting me with the people from all the Americas." Di Blasio rides a similarly diverse, multi-cultural road on Solo (BMG U.S. Latin), which, despite its title, features only one solo piano piece - a subdued reprise of the whimsical title track, which is introduced and then enhanced by the Miami Symphony Orchestra. The appeal lies in the combination of catchy pop hooks, a mix of gentle grand piano elegance with powerful, driving rhythms, and an honest, deeper spiritual expression that is lacking in the average smooth jazz product. While at the core of many ...
| | Est-Ce Que Tu Le Sais: Best Of Sylvie Vartan CD (1998)
Tango songs
$16.65 French pop vocalist Sylvie Varton is showcased on this best-of set, which focuses on her 1960s hits, including "Est-ce Que Tu Le Sais?," "Dansons," and "Avec Moi."
With 30 tracks spanning 1961 to 1967, this is the most comprehensive single-CD compilation of Sylvie Vartan's early recordings, and probably the one most apt to interest listeners beyond the French borders. Although it's a good-value representation of her '60s work, it's not all that fine musically, despite her considerable French stardom and the relatively high awareness of her name among international audiences. Certainly it's not as good as the best French pop singers of the era who were influenced by rock & roll, in part because a high percentage of the tracks are ...

| | Trans-Siberian Orchestra The Lost Christmas Eve CD (2004)
Tango CD music
$9.85 Composer and producer Paul O'Neill favors big, theatrical arrangements and booming production, often utilizing vocal choirs (both gospel and classical), orchestral instruments, and a rock/big-band ensemble to achieve maximum oomph. His compositions are a catalog of emotion-stirring styles, as he glides from piano-pounding pop ("Christmas Nights in Blue") to bouncy fusion ("Christmas Jazz") to hard-edged rock ("Christmas Jam") to chamber music ("Remember"). Traditional carols appear amongst--and sometimes within--O'Neill's exciting originals. This dual approach is used most strikingly on "For the Sake of Our Brother," on which vocalist Daryl Pediford twines a heartrending "O' Come All Ye Faithful" into an impassioned Tom Waits-like ballad about faith and trust. With THE LOST CHRISTMAS EVE, Trans-Siberian Orchestra has created ...

$14.79 | | K T Oslin Rca Country Legends CD (2002) Remastered
Tango music CDs
$7.59 Recorded in Nashville, Tennessee between 1987 & 1991. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle.
When K.T. Oslin came along in the mid-'80s, she was a true original. She broke the mold of young, cute singers doing cookie-cutter songs and injected some much-needed spunk and maturity to pop country. This collection rounds up tracks from her tenure at RCA in the '80s and her stay at BNA in the '90s. The 16 tracks include ten Top 40 hits, including the number ones "Do Ya'," "I'll Always Come Back," "Hold Me," and "Come Next Monday." This collection is recommended to anyone who loves women who sing real country music, like Patsy Cline or Loretta Lynn or k.d. lang. Be sure to add K.T. Oslin to that list. ~ Tim Sendra

| | Jazz Ambassador: Scott Robinson Plays The Compositions Of Louis Armstrong CD (2004)
Tango songs
$9.65 While most jazz listeners and critics name Louis Armstrong as the genre's foremost innovator, Scott Robinson still believes that certain Armstrong contributions have been overlooked. Whereas Armstrong has received credit for his improvisations and his scat-style singing, few recall his compositions. Jazz Ambassador: Scott Robinson Plays the Compositions of Louis Armstrong makes just such a case, with multiple instrumentalist Robinson and a handful of other players offering interpretations of 14 pieces written or co-written by Armstrong. What's strange, and kind of neat, is how elastic many of these Armstrong ...
