Principally recorded at Morgan Studios, London, England. Includes liner notes by Ian Anderson.
Tull's third album finds them pulling definitively away from their blues-rock beginnings and heading towards the folk-influenced prog-rock that would become their trademark. It captures a brief, crucial moment in the band's life. They hadn't yet adopted the complex, medieval-oriented approach of their most famous works, but they had progressed enough to record some of Ian Anderson's most unpretentious, personal and affecting songs. Instead of courtly prog-rock or Cream-ish electric blues, BENEFIT is full of visceral, electrified folk-rock. The light, acoustic-flavored "With You There to Help Me" and "Inside" are full of thoughtful passion. The harder-edged "To Cry You a Song" and "Teacher" are examples of Tull's ever-present way with a hooky riff. For those distrustful of fancy time signatures and complex song suites, a strong case could be made for BENEFIT as Tull's most satisfying effort.

Jethro Tull Benefit Songs Benefit Music Review Average Rating: (4.6 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Shouldn't have messed with a good thing When I bought Jethro Tull Benefit, I expected Jethro Tull Benefit. Instead, I got all the songs from the original ,plus bonus tracks but in a completely different order that I had grown to love. I love the songs but in the mix as presented it just wasn't the same. I felt lucky to be able to find this on CD but it's not Benefit as I knew and loved Submitted by mgeraghty (SLC USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.
A staple from my favorite all timers This has perennially been on my favorites list since it's release in 1970. I still have the old vinyl lp and original cover. One of my favorite traits on this collection is the haunting flute-giggling Anderson does on "With You There To Help Me". Others may choose "Thick As A Brick" or "AquaLung" as a favorite album, but this one just touches a musical response of me. I love it. Always have, always will. this is one of tulls best DONT LET PEOPLE FOOL YOU ON THIS ONE. NOT A GOOD REMASTER. WITH YOU THERE TO HELP ME. I HAD TO TURN THE VOLUME UP. LOW FREQUENCY. NOTHING TO SAY SOUNDED LIKE IT WAS RECORDED FROM A ALBUM THAT WAS WARPED AND THE FINAL TEACHER SOUNDED TO RUFF. SO THAT LEAD ME TO ANOTHER REMASTER MADE IN CANADA. BETTER IMPROVEMENT. EXCEPT TEACHER. NOT AS RUFF. BUT STILL NEEDED IMPROVED. THE JAPAN MINI LP WAS EVEN BETTER IMPROVEMENT THAN THE CANADA RELEASE. EVERY DETAIL OF SONGS CAME OUT AS I NOT HEARD ON THE CANADA VERSION. EVEN TEACHER IMPROVED. NOT RUFF AT ALL. EXCEPT THE VOLUME WAS NOT MATCHED WITH THE OTHER SONGS. SO I HAD TO TURN IT UP A COUPLE OF NOTCHES. Submitted by RANDY (DOWAGIAC, MI) Was This Review Helpful? Subtle Rock Classic from early Tull On Benefit, Tull found their mature rock sound typified by 'Teacher' which mocks gurus (not Jesus), and conformity to social group pressures. Lyrically complex and sonically rich, especially the acoustic songs like Son. Sheer sparkling beauty and joy in the acoustic numbers like Inside and Singing All Day-- required listening for any Tull lover. Then there's the angry rockers-- classics like Teacher, Nothing To Say & To Cry you a song. And check out how Play In Time shows Tull starting to evolve towards the progressive epic rock styles of Thick as a Brick. If you like Teacher or Tull, this is an essential CD to have. Benefit album
$11.45 This reissue of AQUALUNG includes a 15-minute interview and 5 bonus tracks. The booklet contains 20 pages of lyrics, photographs and reviews.
The leap from 1970's BENEFIT to the following year's AQUALUNG is one of the most astonishing progressions in rock history. In the space of one album, Tull went from relatively unassuming electrified folk-rock to larger-than-life conceptual rock full of sophisticated compositions and complex, intellectual lyrical constructs. While the leap to full-blown prog-rock wouldn't be taken until a year later on THICK AS A BRICK, the degree to which Tull upped the ante here is remarkable. The lyrical concept--the hypocrisy ...

Two years on from the conceptual innovations of THICK AS A BRICK, Tull had learned how to crystallize the creativity of that prog-rock masterpiece and incorporate it into more traditional song structures. Thus, the songs here are full of daunting time signatures and dazzling feats of instrumental derring-do, but all in the context of shorter, more concise composition. There's also a darker edge to things here, as introduced by the tumultuous title cut.
The band's fascination ...
| | Jethro Tull Minstrel In The Gallery CD (1975) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Benefit album
$8.69 Jethro Tull was at the height of its fame in the mid-'70s. Although critics sometimes found their songs overly ornate and the lyrics too arty, the fans didn't mind, and Tull was one of the most successful live acts in the world. MINSTREL IN THE GALLERY showcases Ian Anderson's idiosyncratic vision of progressive rock, one in which he married hard-rock chords and thunderous rave-ups with gentle balladry and the earthy sounds of his flute and acoustic guitar.
MINSTREL vacillates between gentle, lilting melodies ("Requiem," the gorgeous "One White Duck") and upbeat stompers. The sprawling title track, which opens the album, is typical of the band's mini-opera approach. Anderson initially ...
| | Jethro Tull Songs From The Wood CD (1977) Remastered
Benefit CD music
$9.99 In terms of rustic, tights-wearing, elf-loving, flute-heavy, British/Celtic folk-tinged '70s prog-rock, SONGS FROM THE WOOD is the most Tull of all Jethro Tull albums. By 1977 the band had ventured far enough from its heavy blues-rock beginnings to create a completely unique, idiosyncratic sound, filled with European folk mythology, rural imagery and an endearing ...

Benefit music CDs
$41.75 From the outgrowth of Steampacket, a band that included not only Brian Auger and Julie Driscoll, but also a young Rod Stewart, came Auger and Driscoll's collective effort that produced two albums. When Driscoll left in 1969 to pursue a solo career, Auger, drummer Clive Thacker, and bassist Dave Ambrose continued as Brian Auger & the Trinity. Open has been unfairly characterized as a kind of groove jazz rip, one that combines Wes Montgomery, Jimmy McGriff, and the rock sensibilities of the psychedelic era. Whatever. There are many tracks here, from deep grooved funky jazz to lilting ballads and greasy blues numbers and the skronky exotica number "Goodbye Jungle Telegraph." Auger may not have been as gifted an organist as Alan Price technically, but he could more than hold his own on the Hammond B-3 (as evidenced by the first two tracks here which are instrumentals, "In And Out" and "Isola Nate"). He ...
