| | Anthrax Universal Masters Collection CD - Import Anthrax Discography of CDs
Just about every major label began issuing budget-priced sets of its catalog artists come the early 21st century, such as the Universal Masters Collection, which inherited the back catalog of former Island recording artist Anthrax. Issued in early 2002, the 15-track Anthrax edition of Universal Masters Collection focuses solely on the group's recordings with singer Joey Belladonna (1985 through 1991), which means that the front cover image is a quite misleading botch job (Belladonna's replacement, John Bush, is featured in the group shot). Despite the error, the set comes pretty darn close to being among the best Anthrax overviews assembled yet. Many consider the "Belladonna era" of Anthrax to be group's strongest (both artistically and commercially), as the group helped put thrash metal on the map, as well as single-handedly creating the rap-metal genre, spotlighted on a pair of tracks featured here, "Bring the Noise" (which featured Public Enemy) and "I'm the Man" (unfortunately, the original version of the song isn't included here; instead, you get the cringe-inducing remake, "I'm the Man '91"). Despite their acclaimed rap experiments, Anthrax was a red-blooded thrash metal band, and the cream of this era is represented quite well, including such all-time metal classics as "A.I.R.," "I Am the Law" (a song about the comic book hero Judge Dredd, written years before Sylvester Stallone ruined it with his stink-bomb movie adaptation), "Indians," and a pair of great covers, Trust's "Antisocial" and Joe Jackson's "Got the Time." Anthrax's Universal Masters Collection doesn't touch upon all eras of the band, but by and large, it's still a solid collection. ~ Greg Prato

| | Rush Chronicles CDs (1990)
Universal Masters Collection music CDs
$18.09 This 2 disc set contains a 10 page booklet, historical annotations and photographs. Also contains live versions of "What You're Doing" and "A Passage To Bangkok," both appearing on CD for the first time.
Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way," "Working Man," and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof.

Universal Masters Collection songs
$7.59 The harbingers of British metal's new wave at the dawn of the 1980s, Motorhead toughened the hard-rock sound of the previous decade with a sheath of biker black leather and a broth of intoxicants. Collectables Records has put together a sampling of their best songs performed live, with an interview with mole-sporting leader Lemmy as a chaser. As a live band, Motorhead's black tar rumble takes on an even more chaotic feel, while classics like "Back at the Funny Farm" and "Marching Off to War" acquire a rugged new life.

Universal Masters Collection album
$11.89 This special edition of KILLING THE DRAGON includes rare bonus live tracks with Deep Purple plus a video for "Push".
Sword-and-sorcery maven Ronnie James Dio keeps trucking in these Lord Of The Rings/Harry Potter times with KILLING THE DRAGON, his ninth studio album. Retaining the same line-up as 2000's MAGICA, the only change comes in the shape of former Hurricane/House Of Lords guitarist Doug Aldrich. Although it's easy to dismiss Dio the lyricist as some guy who tends to write about rainbows, spells and other fantasy-linked matter, this particular outing has him penning allegories firmly rooted in the 21st century. The galloping title track alludes to electronic serfdom and digital dreams while taking aim at the grip computers and the internet have on society. "Rock & Roll" addresses the knee-jerk self-censorship some radio stations perpetuated immediately following 9/11's tragic events.
