"The first full-length gangster picture ever made" according to its director, Raoul Walsh, who would later make "The Roaring Twenties," "High Sierra," "The Bowery" and "White Heat." "Regeneration" (72 min.) is a powerful slum melodrama produced in 1915 on location in the lower east side of New York City, with a gaggle of authentic low-life types performing alongside professional actors. As an added bonus on this DVD, "Young Romance" (58 min.), also released in 1915, is a recent rediscovery that forever silences the claim that refined comedy cannot be conveyed via the screen. Filmed on location in the slums of the lower east side, "Regeneration" follows the story of a tough-as-nails orphan as he grows up alone on the unforgiving streets of New York City. Having spent his formative years running with a dangerous crowd of thugs and petty thieves, he becomes a prosperous, full-time criminal by the tender age of 25. But through the inspiration of Mamie Rose, the kind-hearted matron of a downtown mission, he eventually realizes that it's not too late for him to regain his lost innocence. Filmed on location in the Bowery of New York before World War I, this silent feature is the first gangster movie about a hoodlum who is turned away from a life of crime by a beautiful social worker. Also includes a short called "The Police Force of New York City" filmed in 1910 and a newly recorded musical score, composed and performed by Philip Carli. REGENERATION was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry in 2000. Regeneration Reviews: "...Filmed in gritty Bowery locales and exploring the causes of crime in convincing detail..."

"Regeneration" is in the Library of Congress National Registry of essential American films.

$24.49 This horror classic was produced by Universal (beginning that studio's string of brilliant horror movies) in response to the success of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. Universal chose two luminaries of German Expressionism, director Paul Leni and actor Conrad Veidt, for the film and in doing so introduced a new and highly influential aesthetic to American movies.
The film stars Veidt as Gwynplaine, the son of an aristocrat who is kidnapped for political reasons before being disfigured by a gypsy surgeon, who leaves the boy's face paralyzed in a contorted smile. Finding refuge in a traveling theatre troupe, Gwynplaine's lineage is eventually discovered and he soon finds himself ...

$31.25 Considered by many to be the greatest of cinema's silent clowns, Buster Keaton was a consummate practitioner of physical comedy. Although labeled the "Great Stone Face," Keaton found tremendous eloquence in his deadpan style with his alert and expressive eyes, lithe acrobat's body, and a consummate air of grace. This release ...

$10.55 Moody, atmospheric, and bordering on the surreal, this thriller was intended by legendary director John Huston (THE MALTESE FALCON, MOULIN ROUGE) to be an allegory for the repressive American government during the red scare. Though this point was ultimately missed by audiences of all political persuasions, the film nonetheless remains a masterpiece of the suspense genre. Jennifer Jones (TENDER IS THE NIGHT) stars as China Valdez, a Cuban woman whose brother is killed by the authorities; she vows revenge, and joins up with a group of revolutionaries planning to take down the corrupt government. She falls in love with Tony Fenner (John Garfield, GENTLEMEN'S AGREEMENT), an American expat who has also joined the people's revolution, with a plan to tunnel under a cemetery, blow up the car of an official, ...

$25.35 Based on the groundbreaking 1912 play by Stanley Houghton, this adaptation is considered to be one of Britain's finest silent films. At the time of its debut, the play HINDLE WAKES shook up audiences and critics by challenging conventional portrayals of female sexuality. When Fanny Hawthorne, an independent working class girl in a Lancashire milltown engages in casual sex, she causes quite a controversy. Fanny must risk being rejected by her community for not prescribing to the social norms expected of young women in Edwardian society. HINDLE WAKES addressed the hypocrisy and double standard surrounding male and ...

$7.65 Orchestra of the Munich Chamber Opera Care of Eberhardt Schoener arranged and conducted by Andrew Powell.
With TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD, Alan Parsons has furthered his bid for mainstream success by combining his lush, synthesized art rock with memorable melodies. In fact, two of the album's songs--the infectious, pulsing "Games People Play" and the dreamily drifting "Time"-- became durable radio singles. Like all of Parsons's efforts, however, this album is far more than just a collection of singles.
TURN OF A FRIENDLY CARD continues Parsons's penchant for concept albums: every song centers on gambling and its literal and metaphorical implications. While this is intriguing, the album's more seductive qualities lie in its densely layered arrangements and pristine production, which create a spacey, expansive, highly detailed ...

Regeneration movie DVD
$9.89 The final shot of the hit film CABARET is a Nazi meeting reflected in a mirror, providing the chilling historical subtext for this groundbreaking musical movie, set in prewar Berlin. Not since GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) had Hollywood produced a more successful film. CABARET was a convention-shattering story that dealt with themes like bisexuality that were still under the radar in the US. Additionally, CABARET made the enormously talented Liza Minnelli an American icon.
Minnelli plays Sally Bowles, an aspiring singer and dancer. The main plot revolves around her relationship with two different men and her life as a singer at the Kit Kat Klub. The film utilizes the traditional conventions of American musical theater while adding in the fiendishly ...
