| | Young & Rollins Sevilla CD Young & Rollins Discography of CDs
Part of the new flamenco movement along with Ottmar Liebert and Strunz & Farah, the guitar duo of Dan Young and Lawson Rollins plays the particular Spanish style with a contemporary jazz and new age attitude. While acknowledging the classical tradition carried on by such luminaries as Paco de Lucia, Young & Rollins also showcase their formidable guitar technique against the occasional funky, finger-slap bassline. Taken as a whole, the combination creates an interesting rub of traditions -- funk meets flamenco. Although Sevilla is full of real grit and passion for Spanish music, the other, more contemporary tradition in the smooth genre of eschewing solos in favor of endlessly repeated melodic themes renders these tracks somewhat anonymous. That said, Young & Rollins do seem to have an excitement for performing that comes through in many of the well-executed arrangements that build the tension to more than a few hot conclusions. ~ Matt Collar

Sevilla music CDs
$15.85 The Eric Plaks Quintet (The Eric Plaks Five)A hard-driving jazz combo featuring the original compositions of its members, the New York-based Eric Plaks Quintet has been together since 2002. Although none of the members of the Quintet are originally from New York City, they all call the neighborhood of Harlem home. With frequent gigs at Cornelia Street Café, Kavehaz (September 10, 2004), Detour, the G-Bar, and Orbit (weekly on Tuesdays), the Quintet is becoming a familiar sound on the New York jazz scene. Two self-produced albums, "The Witch Man" and "Rooftop Reveries" have sold well...enough to pay for themselves. They are both stocked at all three Manhattan branches of Tower Records, and "The Witch Man" is featured in the listening station at the Tower Records Lincoln Center.THE ERIC PLAKS QUINTET IS:ERIC PLAKS - piano. Born and raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Eric has split his adult life between playing jazz and teaching elementary school students in Harlem, and, recently, the South Bronx, where he helped to found Bronx Charter School for the Arts.RIAN WILKINSON - trumpet. Hailing from Peoria, Illinois, Rian moved to Harlem to study the trumpet at City College. An accomplished classical, jazz, and electronic music performer, Rian has appeared in performances throughout New York City. Rian is also a jazz educator, leading the jazz and band programs at Heritage High School in East Harlem.DAVID WALKER - guitar. Born and raised in Atlanta, David likes to say that he "grew into" jazz through the blues and rock-saturated musical environment of his hometown. David moved to Harlem to study jazz at City College, where he won an ASCAP Composer's Prize for his tune "Fog" (on Rooftop Reveries). When not composing or performing, David spends his time as an architect.MOTOKI MIHARA - bass. From Osaka, Japan, Motoki has played jazz his whole life. He moved to Harlem to study at City College, and since graduating has performed with several noted jazz combos. He brings a strong rhythmic feel and amazing communication skills to the Quintet.JON PANNIKAR - drums. Jon is from Fort Smith, Arkansas, a city of slightly less than 100,000 with a surprisingly rich and varied music scene. Cutting his teeth on everything from supper club jazz to punk, Jon was already a seasoned performer when he arrived in Harlem at age 18 to study the drums at City College. Now, seven years later, he has matured into a powerful jazz drummer with a uniquely personal sound. Also heard with Eric Plaks:KOBI SALOMON - alto sax. Born and raised in Tel Aviv, Israel, Kobi has been a resident of Brooklyn for ...
