Heart Attack was as good as any band on the early '80s New York hardcore punk scene, and were -- Bad Brains aside -- the most exciting. They were like a sped-up Clash, with their jackhammer thrills and blasting, primitive, but oddly tight-wound sound. The killer God is Dead 7" perfectly documented what I speak of and comprises tracks 14-16 on this chronological disc. Two later 12" EPs were good too; the first EP, Keep Your Distance, suffered from awful, muddy sound, and the latter, Subliminal Seduction, traded a little of that intensity for a new sophistication -- as vocalist Jesse Malin turned, oh, 15 (ha!) and grew tired of the new bandwagon-jumping hardcore copycats. As good as these are, the real finds are the Mojo Demos, which captures the early mainlining stuff. You can all but see this precocious kid with a big boy's brain and his pals hopping all over the stage like a 33 RPM record at 45, in their "combat boots, crew cuts, and ripped t-shirts," as Bryan Swirsky remembers in his liner notes. You can hear the mixture of Malin's evident zeal and believable snarl that barely hid the excitement these guys had unleashing their pent-up energy, and how frenzied but controlled it all still sounds. You didn't "have to be there," in other words. Get past the first five tracks, which is lesser '77 punk from grade school days, though even those aren't bad. Faster than punk but slower than the later thrash, put them up against the way-lesser Dischord bands of the era, and you'll like the group even more. Heart Attack were a far cry from Malin's 20s, leading D Generation, or his solo output. But what a prodigy he was. A life of rock 'n' roll sure came from this outrageous wellspring! ~ Jack Rabid

| | Last L.A. Explosion CD (1979) Bonus Track; Remastered
Toxic Lullabies: 1980-1984 music CDs
$12.85 Perhaps the least known of the late-'70s L.A. pop acts, the Last rose from the ashes of the Los Angeles club scene alongside bands like 20/20, the Knack, the Nerves, the Plimsouls, et al. Releasing their debut album on a small, albeit influential, indie label didn't help them gain exposure outside of California, but the music contained on this platter is as brilliant as anything that came from that era. Led by Joe Nolte and featuring his brothers Mike and David amongst its members, the Last's secret weapon was the keyboard/flute-playing Vitus Matare, who added extra texture and flair to Joe's engaging songs. Heavily influenced by '60s pop, this album has it all: pure pop ("This Kind of Feeling," "Someone's Laughing"), sunny beach pop ("Every Summer ...
| | Miaow When It All Comes Down CD (2003) Import
Toxic Lullabies: 1980-1984 songs
$14.29 Miaow is one of those curious groups whose mystique and influential sway greatly overshadowed their meager recorded output. Between 1985-1987, the band contributed "Sport Most Royal" to NME's original C-86 compilation, recorded two sessions with legendary British DJ John Peel, and released an unforgettable single on Factory Records. If these feats don't solidify Miaow's old-school indie cred, vocalist Cath Carroll also wrote for NME, married Big Black guitarist Santiago Durango, and went on to be the fanboy fantasy of TeenBeat's Mark Robinson. But the best thing about Miaow's legacy? They actually deserve it. Songs like "Did She?," "Grocer's Dead ...

| | Clean Anthology CDs (2003)
Toxic Lullabies: 1980-1984 CD music
$13.45 Disc one of this indispensable set has all the early, classic songs: the silly organ-soaked frenzy of "Tally Ho," the scrappy sing-along "Beatnik," the Pavement-covered "Oddity," and the gorgeous lament, "Getting Older." Disc two compiles the best songs from The Clean's reformation during which they made 1990's VEHICLE, '94's MODERN ROCK and '96's UNKNOWN COUNTRY. Most often operating as a trio, the core of The Clean were the brothers Kilgour, David and Hamish, with bassist and Bats frontman Robert Scott. While The Clean remain a cult band, their fanbase is loyal and obsessive; and while they've influenced countless bands over the years, if not the entire subgenre known as indie-pop, it's rare that any of their followers ...
