Recorded in 1976 & 1978. Includes liner notes by Bob Koester.
Art Hodes originally recorded the 15 tracks heard on this Delmark CD for Euphonic during a marathon session in 1978, though only two songs heard on this release were ever issued by the latter label. It's hard to understand why they were ignored, as the then 73-year-old pianist's blues-drenched style and strong left hand make for a memorable studio date, covering infrequently performed songs like "Jackass Blues" and "Chimes Blues" (both of which are associated with King Oliver), as well as very familiar traditional jazz fare like "St. James Infirmary," "Tin Roof Blues," and "Royal Garden Blues." His strident take of Fats Waller's "Blue Turning Grey Over You" and Duke Ellington's "The Mooche" are also delightful. This 2001 release is a welcome addition to the late pianist's legacy. ~ Ken Dryden
Art Hodes' career as a pianist (and journalist) started in the 1920s & continued into the 1990s - eight decades! He recorded for Decca, Mercury, as well as what he liked to call "the modest labels." These blues-drenched solo piano performances celebrate
Solo performer: Art Hodes (piano).Down Beat (May 2002, p.56) - 4 out of 5 stars - "Hodes, a grand master of blues piano, achieves a remarkable economy of gesture with his carefully paced and thoughtful appraisals of early-jazz staples..." Tribute To The Greats album
$15.25 Truth be told, the Trembling Blue Stars routine was getting kind of stale by the release of Seven Autumn Flowers in 2004. With that album they crossed the line that divides reliable and predictable; no longer did the morose lyrics, melancholy vocals, minor chords and cheesy synths make a positive impression. Luckily for fans of the band, The Last Holy Writer is a comeback of sorts, certainly an improvement, and maybe even one of their finest records. How did they do it? It's hard to say because on the surface it seems like not much has changed sound or mood-wise. There's still a preponderance of downbeat lyrics and Bob Wratten hasn't suddenly traded in his mope for a smile, no fear of that anytime soon. The building blocks of their sound are mostly the same too. What makes ...

Tribute To The Greats music CDs

Recorded between 1939 & 1950. Originally released on Columbia (901) & Columbia (997).
This 24-track CD, comprised of the contents of two Basie compilation LPs from 1956 and 1957, is a real treat for the bandleader's fans and for big-band swing enthusiasts in general. Basie's work is represented in two distinct periods at OKeh and Columbia Records, from 1939-1946, and 1950-1951. The first was the prime of the classic big-band era, when Basie was at the top of the musical world, striding easily between jazz and popular audiences -- and the cuts from 1939-1946 are represented here in far better sound quality than on any of Columbia's own Basie reissues to date; on that basis alone, this CD is a must-own title. But the 1950-1951 cuts, featuring Basie leading a much smaller group, are also worthwhile musically, and far less familiar to most listeners -- he could still swing, and the playing was still hot, even if relatively few people were buying the records. Up until this release, his early-'50s material was never represented on CD, just as this entire period in Basie's career is almost never written about, skipped over in favor of his reformed "new testament" band. The ...

$10.69 SALT SONG is a 1971 release by jazz saxophonist Stanley Turrentine.
Stanley Turrentine's stint with Creed Taylor's CTI label may not have produced any out-and-out classics on the level of the very best LPs by Freddie Hubbard, Hubert Laws, or George Benson, but the bluesy tenorist's output was consistently strong and worthwhile for all but the ...
