With a psychedelic badge sewn firmly on their record's sleeve (note the band's pastel-colored heads growing out of a leafy tree on the cover of ONCE WE WERE TREES), Beachwood Sparks settle deeper into the shimmering rustic groove established on their eponymous debut. As songs like "Yer Selfish Ways" bite the Byrds' harmonies or, like "Manatee," evoke the slowpoke country of HARVEST-era Neil Young, the quartet clearly dwell in the sunniest patch of Laurel Canyon--or at the very least in a backyard in Silverlake with a record collection full of late '60s L.A. darlings.
What makes them such a good band--and among the finest in the alt-country pantheon--is their ability to dust their influences with a contemporary resonance. Recorded at J. Mascis's western Massachusetts studio, ONCE WE WERE TREES has enough unique touchstones--arpeggios layered to a near ridiculous degree, clarity-hampering effects, and even bursts of guitar noise (such as on "You Take the Gold" and the mind-melding title track)--to stake a claim of modern ownership on the vintage L.A. sounds. Besides, with songs as infectious as "The Sun Surrounds Me," who's counting references?

The Shins appeared out of the middle of New Mexico as if by magic, though they had been around for a while under several other names on several different labels. In a landscape of boy bands, pre-teen chanteuses, and nu metal, the literate, '60s-influenced jangle of the Shins' debut seems a bizarre anomaly. This is indie rock that channels Love and Creation rather ...
| | Beachwood Sparks Make The Cowboy Robots Cry CD (2002) Extended Play
Once We Were Trees music CDs
$8.25 The first EP by dream country rockers Beachwood Sparks emphasizes the more hazily psychedelic side of the updated late-Byrds formula they perfected on their two previous full-lengths. With thicker organs, tape manipulation, odder song structures, and lush tremoloes framing their trademark pedal steel and McGuinn guitar arpeggios, MAKE THE COWBOY ROBOTS CRY focuses largely on languid, sleepy lullabies. "Hibernation" and "Ponce de Leon Blues" barely move the VU needle, but provide peaceful comedowns for a Laurel Canyon-themed afterparty. The EP marks the return of original drummer Jimmy Hey to the fold, who makes his energetic presence felt ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Once We Were Trees songs
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative arrangements. Inexplicably unreleased on CD ...
| | Shins Chutes Too Narrow CD (2003)
Once We Were Trees album
$12.29 Recorded in James Mercer's Basement, Portland, Oregon and Avasti Studio, Seattle, Washington.
When the Shins bowled over music fans and critics alike in 2001 seemingly out of nowhere (but actually out of Albuquerque and years of playing together) with OH, INVERTED WORLD, their stunningly beautiful debut, the comparisons came pouring in. Scribes likened their insistent, melodic sound and James Mercer's hyper-literate, oblique but mellifluous lyrics to many mostly anachronistic, all deeply revered sources, including everything from the Beach Boys to Love.
The follow-up, CHUTES TOO NARROW, meets and often manages to exceed the tremendous, burgeoning buzz surrounding it. Mercer and co. retain all the elements that made their debut ...
