Personal opinions...
I have had the pleasure of seeing the video rather than listening to the CD. However, to say that this work is anything but original is to liken the raw majesty of Mt. Everest to the weathered Appalachian Mountains. There is no comparison. The concept is to bring out the mystery and majesty of a planet that we know little to nothing about and to set it in a mythological time and place. The music is very much driving and eclectic, with no sacrifice to originality, because of the subject. We are, after all, speaking about the god of war. Mars (the Greek Ares) was not one for flowery anthems, but music that was befitting a god of war. Movement 1 is a prime example of this as one can imagine, if they only use their mind's eye, the armies of nations marching toward one another in an inexorable dance of power and death--something for which Ares is well known.
