Michael Jackson had recorded solo prior to the release of Off the Wall in 1979, but this was his breakthrough, the album that established him as an artist of astonishing talent and a bright star in his own right. This was a visionary album, a record that found a way to break disco wide open into a new world where the beat was undeniable, but not the primary focus -- it was part of a colorful tapestry of lush ballads and strings, smooth soul and pop, soft rock, and alluring funk. Its roots hearken back to the Jacksons' huge mid-'70s hit "Dancing Machine," but this is an enormously fresh record, one that remains vibrant and giddily exciting years after its release. This is certainly due to Jackson's emergence as a blindingly gifted vocalist, equally skilled with overwrought ballads as "She's Out of My Life" as driving dancefloor shakers as "Working Day and Night" and "Get on the Floor," where his asides are as gripping as his delivery on the verses. It's also due to the brilliant songwriting, an intoxicating blend of strong melodies, rhythmic hooks, and indelible construction. Most of all, its success is due to the sound constructed by Jackson and producer Quincy Jones, a dazzling array of disco beats, funk guitars, clean mainstream pop, and unashamed (and therefore affecting) schmaltz that is utterly thrilling in its utter joy. This is highly professional, highly crafted music, and its details are evident, but the overall effect is nothing but pure pleasure. Jackson and Jones expanded this approach on the blockbuster Thriller, often with equally stunning results, but they never bettered it. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine As the lead singer of the Jackson 5, Michael Jackson had already been labeled a legend at a young age; but OFF THE WALL introduced the world to the adult Michael Jackson, and proved that he was still very much worthy of that label. It was the real beginning for Michael as a solo artist, and opened the doors for his next album THRILLER, which would become the greatest selling album of all time and help foist upon a Jackson a new title: King Of Pop. Under the supervision of Quincy Jones, OFF THE WALL illustrated some of Jackson's most soulful material. The title-track is among the album's smoothest, and introduces his silky feel for the dance-floor. The lively "Working Day And Night" was a teaser for the singles "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" and "Rock With You," both of which reached #1 on the pop charts. Slowing down the pace, the album also hosted some romantic tunes which, through the years, have become classics in their own right. With "Girlfriend" and "She's Out Of My Life," Michael proved that he never lost his golden touch when it came to love songs.

Michael Jackson Off The Wall Songs Off The Wall Music Review Average Rating: (4.9 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A SOUL CLASSIC Back in the day, this record was all over the clubs. This is a soul classic and Michael's best dance record. So why did Epic have to gum it up with talking commentaries. Put that stuff on a separate disc if it must be included. This kind of nonsense is all too prevalent with remastered reissues. Record companies need to leave it alone!!! I just wanna hear the music, man. Must have for collecters! Just recently added this CD to my collection as it is indeed the album that started his thrust to mega stardom. Quincy Jones and Jackson have one that shows the world that Michael's talent is truly God given! Submitted by a reviewer (Charlotte NC, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

The Coming Everbody knew about Michael Jackson before this cd. After this cd thats when the legend of Michael started to grow. Song after song Michael would capture you, and bring you into his world of music. And the song OFF THE WALL,is probably the most unrated song he has ever did. This One is his best album, cause this one showed the world what the gloved one can do. Submitted by machocuzz (Fort Worth,Tx,Usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 3 of 5 found this helpful.

Off The Wall
$43.09 In more ways than one, Macy Gray is a bit like the Dan Marino of neo-soul: full of promise and potential but never truly reaching her full blossom. Having only reached the Top Ten promised land once (and Top 40 only three times) in her five-year career on the good ship Epic, it's hard to call this a "very best of" and get excited about the songs held within the packaging. Starting off with the one-two chronological punch of "I Try" and "Do Something," the air starts to leak out of the ball ever so slowly as the compilation progresses, leaving a deflating feeling by the time the new additions are reached. And while "Love Is Gonna Get You" is as delightful as anything she's done ...

Off The Wall
$10.45 Personnel: Birdman (rap vocals); 6 Shot, Lil Wayne, Lil' Mo, Main , Big Tymers, T.A., Currency, Lil' Carl, Chop, Bun B (rap vocals). Dirty South haters are going to point out that Fast Money covers the same old tired topics Cash Money releases have beaten to death for nearly a decade and a half. Yes, thugging, big pimping, spitting bravado, and boasting about the quality of Cash Money women and weed are all over Birdman's sophomore release, but Cash Money's CEO shows that his pimp hand is strong, giving his entire roster the Dirty South blueprint for a perfect weekend album. As a rapper, Bryan Williams (or Baby, now almost always Birdman) has always been a P. Diddy character, serviceable with the rhymes but a better boss and impresario. Here, he's a step up from on fire, keeping it simple as expected but always driven and cocksure. What's fascinating is that he's also ready for your ire, begging haters to bring it ...
