The title says it all. The cream of the crop from one of rock's most enduring and successful bands. Hardcore Journey fans will want this because of the fidelity improvement; (the material is remastered from the original source tapes). Everyone else will want this because it's simply one of the best hits collections ever released. With new liner notes by Rolling Stone's David Wild, ESSENTIAL is over 130 minutes of music covering the group's 1978-1996 output. The classics ("Don't Stop Believin', "Who's Crying Now", "Faithfully") are known and loved by all, but it's the minor hits and album tracks that truly shine here. "Patiently" (a gorgeous ballad) and "Line Of Fire" (a boogie woogie crowd pleaser from the live CAPTURED) will make you want to purchase the original albums from which they hail, as will the beautiful "Good Morning Girl." From blistering, adrenaline-pumping rockers ("Any Way You Want It", "Chain Reaction", "Escape) to raise-your-lighter power ballads ("When You Love A Woman", "Open Arms") and everything in between (the reggae-ish "Baby I'm A Leavin' You) there isn't a bad cut here. The Journey continues...

a much better compilation than previous release great cd! this one is a better hits compilation that the previous single disc version that came out several years ago and is updated to include songs from their more recent album releases. my only disappointment is that they didn't include the title soundtrack from the movie "tron" which is a rare find today. the best Journey collection ever in one package I thoroughly enjoy listening to this CD. I like the mixture of old Journey (before Escape) and new Journey (Escape and after). I would highly recommend this CD to any Journey fan. It's a MUST HAVE! Submitted by a reviewer (Kokomo, Indiana) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Absolutely Awesome These guys took Arena Rock and made it a radio and commercial mainstay for many years to come. You can tell a great artist by how he is remembered. These guys are known for the songs, and only the songs. Not their live performances, which must have been awesome, and not their personalities, which much have varied a lot, and not one particular band member's sound, for it all fits into one cohesive whole on each and every single song. It is truly the songs that embody Journey, and this album proves it. Ranging all over the map, from mega-smash hits to not-quite-hits-but-still-amazing (take a look at Disc 2)songs, this album accomplishes what many greatest hits compilations lack: a true sense of the artist behind them. The only other album that does this in a similar style is Paul McCartney's "wingspan: Hits & History," which, for better or worse, did its job. I strongly recommend this album to people, because you won't find a better compilation of Journey music for a while. But who knows; maybe, with time and Journey's new lineup, a third disc could be added with the new songs and other more obscure, but amazing songs by the group. "One love feeds the fire...." $17.09 Born to unusually hip parents in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, singer-songwriter Jen Cass was raised on a healthy mix of folk music, homegrown vegetables, spontaneous dancing, black licorice and Motown. When asked about her childhood Jen muses, "I remember my mom doing pirouettes around the living room with Joan Baez and Simon & Garfunkel blasting in the background. Then dad would pull out his guitar and we'd all sing Tom Paxton songs. “My sister and I weren’t allowed to watch TV, so we sang, danced and read every book we could get our hands on. By the age of five, I was a miniature troubadour in bad seventies clothing, quoting Jack London and belting out Jim Croce tunes. I love my parents for that.”While her fashion sense has evolved over time, Jen has always remained true to her folk roots, writing beautifully crafted songs that draw comparisons to songwriting legends Bob Dylan, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Indigo Girls, and Dar Williams, as well as playwright Eugene O'Neill. In the words of Suzanne Glass of Indie-Music.com, “Cass’ songs are lyrical gems. She weaves fables with her words that would make Aesop jealous.” In November 1996, Jen released her first CD, Brave Enough To Say, and quickly sold over 2000 copies. Jen recorded Brave with the help of the world famous Russian surf-rock band Red Elvises. “We mixed contemporary ...
