Scout Niblett: Emma Louise Niblette. Recording information: Chem19 Studios (04/2001). Similar to many of the artists in the Secretly Canadian stable, Scout Niblett also has an affinity for soft vocals, hard acoustic guitars, and tear-drenched lyrics that bubble over with emotion. Immediate references to Cat Power and PJ Harvey may be inevitable, but Scout (aka Emma Louise Niblett) definitely has a voice all her own. And it's easily distinguished for those who can tell Songs: Ohia's Jason Molina and Palace's Will Oldham apart, but for others there won't be as much discrepancy. Niblett's debut, Sweet Heart Fever, is filled with lush, melodic compositions of the minimal sort. Usually with just a guitar and angelic voice, Niblett tells serious tales with heartfelt songwriting, sounding uncannily American even though she's British. Her somewhat gothic sound is incredibly warm in tone yet touches a sense of longing and loneliness. Regardless, Niblett will warm your heart from the first couple of tracks in. Only occasionally is Kristian Goddard's drumming enlisted, and it sits comfortably in the second place, providing a light oomph to Niblett's swelling vocals. The songs are pensive and tuneful throughout, and only in one rare instance does she fall off the rails. This exception is the clumsy "Big Bad Man," even though it is the hardest of all the tracks -- as it sees Niblett getting up from behind her guitar and seemingly rocking out in a somewhat childish and goofy manner. Aside from that, the other 13 tracks are superlative. Sweet Heart Fever is a stunning debut. ~ Ken Taylor

| | Age Of Ruin Tides Of Tragedy CD (2004)
Sweet Heart Fever
$12.15 Age of Ruin: Daniel Fleming (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Joseph Scheibel (bass guitar); Colin Kercz (drums, electronics); Ben Swan, Brian Kerley. Personnel: Daniel Fleming (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Brian Kerley (vocals, guitar); Ben Swan (vocals); Jill Jamshidnejad (viola). Additional personnel: Rock Kozerka (vocals); Jill Jamshidnejad (viola); Chris Fleming (bass guitar). Recording information: The West Wing Of The Black House, Washington DC (12/2003-03/2004). With so little quality melodic death metal to go round on U.S. shores, one can't help but want to pull for Washington, D.C.'s Age of Ruin, whose year 2000 debut album, Black Sands of the Hourglass, put a welcome American face on the well-loved Gothenburg sound. However, much has changed in the band's situation (not least a large amount of personnel turnover) during the intervening years leading up to their second release, 2004's long-awaited The Tides of Tragedy. Primarily, it appears that the arrival of new vocalist Ben Swan has added ...

$11.39 Raul Acosta, better known in the music industry as "El Presidente del Merengue," was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on September 8, 1971. Born into a musical family, at the age of seven, he and his older brothers Iván and Rafael, in addition to local neighborhood kids, started a pre-adolescent music group called "Los Sobrinos Del Rey". This was the Dominican version of the Jackson 5. With this early experience, Raul was able to develop his musical talent as well as his stage presence. The group went on to perform in two nationally televised shows on the government TV station, channel four, for a show called "Amarillis con los Niños.” At 9 years old, the family relocated to the United States like every other immigrant family, to work hard and prosper. With no English skills, Raul moved to Jersey City, New Jersey to start his new life. Years later, he moved to Union City where the Hispanic culture was growing stronger.Upon graduating from high school, Raúl began his studies in music and sound engineering by joining Kennedy's Music World, a local music school. There he worked retail and operated the music studio as well as helped students in their classes. In 1990, after graduating high school, he held different positions within the Hudson County government. Finally, in 1994, he formed New York's hottest and most established merengue band, Oro Sólido. That same year, he released his self-titled debut album, Oro Sólido. To his amazement, it was the beginning of a long and exciting career that has spanned over 12 years and worldwide recognition. The albums came almost every year after that. With hits like "Ta Cache," "La Tanguita Roja," "Maria se Fue," "El Baile del Beeper," "Una Nalgadita," "La Morena," and many more, Oro Sólido, positioned itself as one of the biggest Latin music groups in the world. They have surpassed various barriers when it comes to performing in the Anglo media and having their music played on English-speaking radio stations. Raul Acosta has been nominated for and won numerous awards throughout the years, including Premios Estrella, Premios ACE y Premio Lo Nuestro, just to name a few.The group has performed regularly on some of Hispanic TV’s ...
