| | The Very Best of Shelly West CD (2009)
Compendium CD music
$9.58 The 14-track Very Best of Shelly West covers the singer's early-'80s chart-toppers recorded on the Warner/Viva label, including the number one hit "Jose Cuervo." This fairly solid set features the original versions of "Flight 309 to Tennessee," "Another Motel Memory," and "Now There's You." Unfortunately, the hits she recorded with David Frizzell during the same period, specifically "A Texas ...
| | Bad Livers Hogs On The Highway CD (1997)
Compendium music CDs
$15.05 Perhaps it's appropriate that the Bad Livers scaled back their punk influences and played up their traditional bluegrass roots when they moved to Sugar Hill Records for Hogs on the Highway. After all, the label is one of America's best independent country/bluegrass labels, so the group would have to clean up its act somewhat to fit in with the crowd. Fortunately, they haven't cleaned up too much, and Hogs on the Highway is a stomping, infectious collection of twisted newgrass, informed by punk energy but in the style of traditional bluegrass. ~ Thom Owens
Recorded at Minner Bucket Studio, Austin, Texas and the Fire Station, San Marcos, Texas.
Personnel: Edward D. Barnes (vocals, acoustic guitar, resonator guitar, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, percussion); Mark Rubin (vocals, tuba); Bob Grant (acoustic guitar, mandolin); Steve James (mandolin); Erik Hokkanen (fiddle).

| | Cannonball Adderley What Is This Thing Called Soul? CD (1984)
Compendium songs
$9.89 The Cannoball Adderley/Nat Adderley Quintet: Cannonball Adderley (alto saxophone); Nat Adderley (cornet); Victor Feldman (piano); Sam Jones (bass); Louis Hayes (drums).
Recorded live in November 1960. Originally released on Pablo (2308-238). Includes liner notes by Norman Granz.
Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Cannonball Adderley's 1960 Quintet (with cornetist Nat Adderley and pianist Victor Feldman) was in top form during their tour of Europe. Norman Granz did not release the music heard on this CD until almost 25 years after the fact but the strong solos and enthusiastic ensembles had not dated nor faded with time. These versions of "The Chant," "What Is This Thing Called Love?" and "Big 'P'" make for interesting comparisons with the better-known renditions. ...

| | Hollies Would You Believe? CD (1966) Import
Compendium CD music
$27.95 One of the less essential '60s albums by the Hollies, whose capabilities were arguably stretched by the two-album-a-year-pace-in-addition-to-three-hit-singles model established by the Beatles during this time. Their version of Paul Simon's "I Am a Rock" is nice, but the soul and early rock covers of Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and Chuck Berry are pretty dispensable; the Hollies were not the Stones or the Animals, lacking their soul and interpretative imagination. Some of the originals are pretty ho-hum too (including the pathetic "Fifi the Flea," which was covered by the Everly Brothers). But every Hollies album of the '60s has some strong overlooked tracks. On this one, they're the surprisingly tough folk-rockers "Hard, Hard Year" and "I've Got a Way of My Own." The ultra-catchy "Don't You Even Care," written by Clint Ballard, Jr. (also responsible for their number one British hit "I'm Alive," as well as "The Game of Love" and "You're No Good"), is the real obscure gem here and could have well been a hit under its own steam. The album's last song, "I Can't Let Go," was a big hit in Britain (and a small one in the U.S.) and one of the Hollies' best performances. The record was issued in America, in a slightly amended version, as Beat Group! ~ Richie Unterberger
French pressing of the 1966 album is packaged in a Digipak and features 21 tracks including 9 bonus tracks, 'She Gives Me Everything I Want', 'You In My Arms', 'If I Needed Someone', 'Running Through ...
