| | Encores, Legends & Paradox: An Emerson, Lake & Palmer Tribute CD (1999)
Apparition album
$13.85 (MP3 Available for Download) The progressive metal-oriented Magna Carta label assembled a tribute album dedicated to Emerson, Lake & Palmer, with arrangers Robert Berry and Trent Gardner playing major roles in determining the music's direction. Encores, Legends & Paradox varies wildly, not only because of typical tribute album problems (some artists sticking too close to the original versions, others not quite capturing its essential elements), but also because Gardner's arrangements tend to be generic and ineffective. There are some good moments, and some decent ones below those, but digging them out might be more effort than many ELP fans are willing to invest. ~ Steve Huey

| | Arch Enemy Wages Of Sin CDs (2001)
Apparition MP3 Album
$13.45 (MP3 Available for Download) This an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Sounding like a particularly rotten day during the apocalypse, Arch Enemy is a ferocious gang of Swedish death metalers bent on throttling their listeners, and they succeed most magnificently on Wages of Sin. The Scandinavians in general are known most for their allegiance to black metal: atmospheric, epic-sounding, satanic-leaning stuff which they invented. But Arch Enemy, who includes members and former members of Carcass, Armageddon, and Mercyful Fate, is more death than black, but there's a little bit of everything in their mix of Sepultura-like riffage; mid-'80s classic, over-the-top metal solos; meat-cleaver-style hooks; and dirty Florida swamp-style death metal. Of course, death metal can easily become monotonous, but this is not at all the case with Arch Enemy, whose songwriting is way above par. Wages of Sin is the first album from the band featuring their new singer, Angela Gossow, a German blonde whose vocals never sound as if they could possibly be emanating from a woman. Rather, they sound like a guttural blast from the sewers of purgatory. She is just the right touch to add to a band who ranks among metal's most progressive and unique ...

| | Diamond Head To Heaven From Hell CD (1997)
Apparition album
$9.25 Diamond Head's career has to be one of the most frustrating and disappointing in the history of heavy metal. Though they were responsible for creating one of the most influential debut album's of the genre, 1980's Lightning to the Nations, the band quickly lost their way and squandered their potential in a series of lackluster albums and misguided career moves. This EP is a belated attempt to set the record straight. The five songs featured here were among the band's first self-financed recordings in 78/79, but by the time they saw the light of day via 1982's confused Borrowed Time album, their original vision had been corrupted and their overpowering energy dissipated. A case of too many cooks in the kitchen, the songs, and indeed the entire album, became a casualty of MCA's attempts to commercialize Diamond Head's sound, and the band's inability to just say no. Hence these re-mastered, remixed versions, which attempt to restore the cuts' original would-a, ...

| | Transplants CD (2002)
Apparition music CDs
$22.09 The self-titled Transplants album represents Rancid vocalist Tim Armstrong's variant on that great rock & roll staple, the side project. As is often the case with such endeavors by members of famous bands, TRANSPLANTS was recorded bit by bit over the course of a couple of years (presumably during Armstrong's downtime from Rancid). Still, it all hangs together with its raw, organic vibe. Though loops and synthesizer are present nearly every cut, the album maintains an agreeably rough-and-ready rock & roll feel. Fans of Rancid should feel at home with the punk quotient here, but healthy doses ...
