As the last entry in ToYo Records' four-part Science Single Series, The Structure of Scientific Misconceptions/The System of Scientific Misconstructions offers up 13 tracks by six of the Left Coast's quirkiest and most promising punk-oriented acts, from experimental twitch rockers Erase Errata to Tae Won Yu's more pop-oriented solo project, KG. And while its grandiose title implies a conceptual framework surrounding the facts and fictions of scientific research, the compilation seems more concerned with artistic cohesion than offering up any philosophical takes on the subject at hand. And in terms of sonic consistency, at least, Structure succeeds like few other compilations do: these off-kilter robo-rock bands are all bizarrely original enough to hold their own, yet also sound as if they were intended to be heard in the same sci-fi context. Unfortunately, after two stellar contributions from the Bay Area's Erase Errata, the compilation disintegrates into a meandering, hit-or-miss mess. KG and the Devo-influenced duo MeMe America may also contribute worthy tracks, but the Need offer their two worst tracks, beat-tweakers Blectum From Blechdom's three songs never take off, and the four fairy tale tracks from Deerhoof are as frustratingly inane as ever. Which is ultimately why Structure is so disappointing: while the lineup may theoretically be readymade for such a compilation, most of the acts forget that sonic similarities alone do not a successful album make -- the songs themselves should be as engaging and entertaining as the sounds. ~ Jimmy Draper

Structure Of Scientific Misconceptions/The System Of Scientific Misconstructions
$5.49 This was such a natural album for Kenny Rogers, a compilation culled from four different sources, but it works very well. The Top Five 1980 hit with Kim Carnes, her biggest chart song a year before "Bette Davis Eyes" would take the world by storm, and the number one country hit, Top Ten smash with Sheena Easton, the remake of Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight," each open a side of this album, sides which are followed by Dottie West and Rogers performing eight more tunes. Fans of Kenny Rogers will love this despite the fact that the production style and sound of the West/Rogers material is dramatically different from what David Foster put on "We've Got Tonight" and what Rogers and Larry Butler poured over in "Don't Fall in Love With a Dreamer." Rogers and West's 1981 Top 15 hit together, "What Are We Doin' in Love," is missing in action, strange as that seems, but the pair is definitely having fun with this format and the other titles they explore here, songs taken from two different Dottie West LPs: 1978's Every Time Two Fools Collide and 1979's Classics. Both singers sound like the master Ray Charles on the chorus of the Buck Owens-penned "Together Again," copying Charles from his 1966 hit. They don't do the same with "All I Ever Need Is You," though, abandoning Sonny & Cher's stylings for ...

| | Beau Brummels '66 CD (1966)
Structure Of Scientific Misconceptions/The System Of Scientific Misconstructions
$10.45 After turning out two great albums of original material, the West Coast's answer to the Beatles was thrown for a loop when their label forced them to release an entire album of covers. While it's easy to sigh about what might have been if the Beau Brummels were left to their own devices, '66 is not without its charms. Anyone with a soft spot for Brums classics like "Laugh Laugh" and "Just A Little" should find it intriguing to hear them add their own spin to tunes by the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Mamas & Papas, etc. Sal Valentino's melancholy-tinged vocals and Ron Elliott's jangly guitar in their prime are a pleasure to hear, even when they're reinterpreting the work of their contemporaries.
While it has gotten a bum rap in the wake of their subsequent masterpieces, the San Fran-based Beau Brummels major-label debut -- simply titled Beau Brummels 66 -- includes a dozen solid remakes of concurrent pop, folk, and rock tracks. The lineup consisted of Ron Elliott (guitar/vocals), ...
