Between 1975 and 1992, Joan Armatrading released 12 full-length solo albums of new studio recordings on A&M Records, 11 of which reached the British charts, along with ten singles. You might expect that a single-disc 1998 compilation drawn from this material and titled The Collection would present the artistic and commercial highlights of that substantial catalog. But if you did, you would be disappointed in this case. Spectrum Music, a British budget reissue division of PolyGram Records, which, by 1998, owned A&M, has drawn from only three of Armatrading's albums for this package: six tracks come from 1976's Joan Armatrading (among them the Top Ten U.K. hit "Love and Affection"), seven from 1977's Show Some Emotion, and five from 1980's Me Myself I (among them the U.K. chart entry "All the Way From America," but not the U.K. Top 40 title song). No explanation for this peculiar selection is offered, although in his liner notes Arthur Davis writes, "Since 1980, Joan Armatrading has continued to record with considerable success, but has rarely reached the commercial heights she achieved with the three albums from which this compilation has been assembled." That simply is not true. Armatrading's chart placements gradually declined over the 1980s in Great Britain, but her albums Walk Under Ladders (1981) and The Key (1983) made the Top Ten, and even her final A&M album, Square the Circle (1992) reached the Top 40. Longtime fans often feel that an artist did his or her best work early on, and Armatrading's music certainly changed in the 1980s, taking on more of a rock edge. But this is still an odd, unrepresentative compilation that doesn't even choose the best songs from the three albums it samples. ~ William Ruhlmann Collection Review

| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Collection
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat ...

$11.16 Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite ...

| | Bonzo Dog Band History Of The Bonzos CD (1974) (Import) United Kingdom
Collection
$17.79 Originally released in 1974, two years after the greatest comedy rock band in history discovered that, contrary to the title of their reunion album, they couldn't make up and be friendly, The History of the Bonzos has long been one of the most fondly remembered compilations of the age. Like the Beatles' red and blue collections, the Rolling Stones' Hot Rocks, and the Who's Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy, albums that so effortlessly absorbed the oeuvre that a discography seems
incomplete without them, the two-album History of the Bonzos was conceived, designed, and universally lauded for delivering precisely what it promised, a seamless history and a priceless artifact. Drawn from (but not restricted to) across the Bonzos' years with Liberty, which in turn sums up their entire career bar three odd singles at the beginning, History runs from the psycho-sleaze drama of "Big Shot" to the compelling inanity of "Jollity Farm," from the turbo-charged psychedelia of "Mr Apollo" to the fey denouement of "Narcissus," and onto a selection of post-split singles by Viv Stanshall, Roger Ruskin Spear, and Neil Innes. And it is nigh-on perfect. Obsessions trail like running jokes -- a hint of music hall madness, a healthy disrespect for cabaret, a tearful, fearful recollection of school, and a positive hatred of societal stereotypes. The sneering athletics master who torments the odd boy who doesn't like sport, of course, is the same ghastly being that dwells on the far edge of the drainpipe's pink portion -- the kind of person who would ...

Collection
$10.15 Dawn Chorus began in 2001 when recent Greensboro, NC transplant Amy Kingsley walked into Gate City Noise, the local record shop owned by Andrew Dudek. In time, Amy would end up joining Dudek and his neighbor, Will Ridenour, a multiinstrumentalist with ethnomusical tendencies, in many late night sessions at Dudek’s house. Roughly a year later Zachary Mull joined and completed their current core line-up. Ten songs that crackle and sparkle with elements of pop, southern jangle, rock and subtle hints of shoegaze. Recorded by Brian Paulson (Beck, Wilco, Superchunk).Florida St. Serenade is Dawn Chorus\' third record.Download their first two records for free @ www.fractured-discs.comReviews:\"bright, catchy, tuneful indie-pop, heavily reminiscent of Go-Betweens fronted by Robert Forster.
