Iraq
$12.79 Rachel's is a group that defies easy categorization. Variously described as neo-classical, experimental, post-rock, or a chamber ensemble for the indie-rock set, the enigmatic collective specializes in music that blurs the boundaries that usually define genres. They are dedicated to the exploration of ideas and renowned for their independent-minded work with filmmakers, photographers, choreographers, and visual artists.
SYSTEMS/LAYERS was developed by the group in collaboration ...

| | Manu Chao Proxima Estacion: Esperanza CD (2001)
Iraq
$12.35 PROXIMA ESTACION was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album.
Clandestino, Manu Chao's first solo effort, owed its greatness to its character. It was a minimalistic, yet filled with experimentation, album. But, what's most distinctive, it was honest, direct, intimate: the personal diary of someone who had traveled a lot, not only around Latin America but through life. Unfortunately, Chao seems to lose his way a little bit in Esperanza. Apparently intended to be a continuation of what started in Clandestino, it ends being just a clone of it. The reiteration of ideas and formulas takes away from Esperanza everything that made of Clandestino a memorable piece of work. The problem with Esperanza is that Chao, instead of deepening what he proposed in his first album, seems to overfly the surface of his ideas. The consequence of this is that he transforms charm into cliché, leaving the listener with a very light flavor. Anyway, Esperanza still has a bunch of great songs ("Mr Bobby," "Mi Vida," "Trapped By ...

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Iraq
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that ...

| | Jazz At The Philharmonic At The Montreux Jazz Festival 1975 CD (1975)
Iraq
$13.95 Norman Granz and Pablo Records took over a large segment of the 1975 Montreux Jazz Festival and many recordings resulted. This particular CD is a colorful reissue featuring trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Clark Terry, Zoot Sims on tenor, altoist Benny Carter, guitarist Joe Pass, pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Keter Betts, and drummer Bobby Durham performing four fairly lengthy renditions of standards. Everyone is in fine form, but it is the joyful playing of the two complementary but contrasting trumpeters (both of whom can be immediately recognized in a note or two) that makes this a recommended set for fans ...
| | John Hiatt Beneath This Gruff Exterior CD (2003)
Iraq
$14.45 "Some people call it depression and I call it a song." That simple observation from "Uncommon Connection," the rollickingly catchy opening track of songwriter/singer John Hiatt's 2003 release BENEATH THIS GRUFF EXTERIOR, sums it up quite sweetly. Hiatt's been channeling glorious depression through the muse since the early '70s. This release marks his first release with the Goners, a four-man outfit specializing in bar-soaked Southern blues-rockin' highlighted by the virtuoso slide guitar work of occasional Hiatt collaborator Sonny Landreth.
From the aforementioned opening track, GRUFF EXTERIOR is nothing if not exhilarating fun, a collection of songs seemingly shorter than the four minutes they generally run, ...
