Ultravox! fans fall neatly into two groups; aficionados of the John Foxx-led band's first two albums, and those that prefer the Midge Ure-fronted group. However, before Foxx left and Ultravox! lost its exclamation point, the group released a third disc, SYSTEMS OF ROMANCE, which sign-posted the way to the New Romantic sound that would take the Ure-era band to international stardom. Many tracks off that set are included on THE ISLAND YEARS, a round-up of Ultravox!'s early, pre-Midge Ure recordings.
Budget priced anthology of the first three albums the group recorded for Island Records in the UK. John Foxx was at the forefront of these albums and his fingerprints are all over these tracks. Highlights include "Slow Motion", "Hiroshima Mon Amour", "The Man Who Dies Everyday", "Rock Wrok", "Quiet Men" and many more. Island Years album
$7.59 Todd Rundgren's first solo album after the breakup of his '60s band the Nazz originally didn't even feature his name on the cover; despite Rundgren being the only person pictured on the sleeve, it was treated as the self-titled debut of the "band" Runt. (This also explains the confusing title of the second Runt/Rundgren album, ...

Island Years CD music
$7.59 Keyboards dominate the arrangements, with Rundgren, longtime cohort Mark "Moogy" Klingman, and session-man Ralph Schuckett all contributing piano, organ, and vintage '70s-style clavinet. The songs themselves are quirkier and more exploratory than earlier efforts, with the progressive and fusion influences that would dominate Rundgren's forthcoming band Utopia rearing their heads. Yet, at its best, TODD still comes across as a pop album, with soulful gems like "I Think You Know" and snarling rockers like "Heavy Metal Kids" predominating. Listeners looking for more ear-pleasing pop on the order of SOMETHING/ANYTHING? may be surprised by the musical tangents here, but fans of early '70s prog ...

Island Years music CDs
$10.15 LAMENT was a 1980s-era addition to the canon of synth-pop albums from Ultravox, with the band scoring some hit singles with the upbeat "Dancing With Tears in my Eyes" and the mournful title track.
Ultravox were in a gray mood as they launched into their seventh studio album, LAMENT. With the band's previous existential angst now pooling around personal anguish, the album's title track was a study in languorous melancholy, where emotional pain lingers on and on. Even "One Small Day," the most celebratory song on the set, battles depression ...

Island Years songs
$9.39 The 1980 new wave album from the dramatic English romantic movement includes "Blocks on Blocks" and "Steps."
With apologies to Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, and even Duran Duran, this is the music that best represents the short-lived but always underrated new romantic movement. That's fitting, because Visage's frontman, Steve Strange, was the colorfully painted face of the movement, just as this album was its sound. Warming up Kraftwerk's icy Teutonic electronics with a Bowie-esque flair for fashion, Strange and the new romantics created a clubland oasis far removed from the drabness of England's early-'80s reality -- and the brutality of the punk response to it. And no one conjured up that Eurodisco fantasyland better than Visage, whose "Fade to Grey" became the anthem of the outlandishly decked-out Blitz Kids congregated at Strange's club nights. With its evocative French female vocals, distant sirens and pulsing layers of synthesizers, "Fade to Grey" is genuinely ...

VIENNA is one of those rare albums that defines an era. In their first
incarnation, with singer John Foxx, Ultravox merged post-punk and
art-rock in a prescient, highly influential manner. After Foxx's
departure, the band's future seemed in question. Against all odds, they
gained a new lease on life with former Rich Kids singer/guitarist/songwriter Midge Ure, who led them towards a more
stylized, elegant sound full of both accessible melodicism and grand,
sophisticated ...
