| | Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 CD
Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 was the first in a series of 12 released by Motown's U.K. subsidary, Tamla-Motown. Like many in the series, the album mixes bona fide hits like "Jimmy Mack," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," and "The Happening" with more obscure gems like "7-Rooms of Gloom" and "Gonna Give Her All the Love I've Got." Motown's popularity waned slightly with the British Invasion (even though many British acts were covering the label's originals). This compilation was released as the second wave of Motown acts such as the Four Tops and the Temptations were beginning to gain momentum. All selections here were Top 30 U.K. hits. Most will be familiar to both Motown aficionados and the casual music fan ("It Takes Two," "How Sweet It Is," "I Was Made to Love Her"). Although not a comprehensive collection, it does offer the chance to pick up 16 classic tracks on one album -- something not many other mid-'60s Motown albums can boast. ~ Rob Flanagan

$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of ...

Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 CD music
$10.55 In the 1990s, countless R&B acts incorporated hip-hop, but not many of them incorporated outright gangsta rap. Hip-hop-minded R&B artists -- who ranged from Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly and Lauryn Hill to Erykah Badu, Janet Jackson and Aaron Hall -- steered clear of gangsta rap's violent, bloody imagery. But on two rare occasions, West Coast groups brought gangsta rap to R&B -- first was DRS in 1993, then came GAT in 1995. While GAT managed to bridge the gap between NWA and classic soul groups like the O'Jays, the Chi-Lites and the Dramatics, the equally obscure DRS (whose name stands ...

Motown Chartbusters, Vol. 1 music CDs
$12.85 Eazy E’s Latino Protégés the Brownside Release Sophomore Album "The Take Over"The late Eazy-E’s sole Latino protégés, The Brownside, have just released their second album, “The Takeover.” Their first album, “Eastside Drama,” issued in 1995, had been slated for release through Eazy-E’s Ruthless label, until the Compton rapper’s tragic death ended a solid paper trail of release agreements that had been signed between himself and the intensely street oriented gangsta rappers. Finally returning with “The Takeover,” The Brownside is back again with real life street cred, history and tracks that have helped give them their often verified, authentic “la vida gangsta” reputation. The Brownside members are Wicked, Trouble and Toker, who is currently serving time for a sentence in a federal prison. “I expect to be out of here by the end of next year,” he promises. In the meantime, however, his album speaks volumes for him. Eazy’s son, Lil E, still has memories of his father’s close friend Toker, from when they escorted the then ten-year old mini E around Disneyland. “I can’t wait to see Lil E when I am out of here,” says Toker, who adds, “I have a lot to tell him about his father.” Eazy-E and Toker were such a fixture, that in Jerry Heller’s upcoming book, “Ruthless,” slated for release in late August, Heller begins describing the end of Eric’s life by writing, “Only a handful of people were closest to Eric in the weeks leading up to his death. Toker, aka Little Beaver, his Latino street connection. The mixmaster Julio G.” ...
