BBC Sessions + presents archival vintage Faust from various sources. The highlight is the first track, a continuous 20-minute session recorded for John Peel's BBC radio show. It includes "The Lurcher," "Krautrock," and "Do So," the latter a self-mocking pop song making a ludicrous contrast with the previous noise/drone hypnotic anthem. This version of "Krautrock" (12 minutes) tops the one found on Faust IV (if anything, it sounds clearer). "Party 1" was first released on the ReR 1986 LP Munich and Elsewhere but did not appear on the reissue 71 Minutes of Faust. "We Are the Hallo Men" is a groove-based piece with samples and typical Faust vocals previously released on the ReR 1988 LP The Last LP. All other tracks, including the alternate takes of "So Far" and "Meer," see the light of day for the first time here. The sound collage "(360)" is not essential listening, but the spirited "Party 9" and the futuristic folk of "Party 10" have everything you could wish for from unreleased Faust songs. Chris Cutler, who compiled BBC Sessions +, did not provide detailed recording and personnel credits; all we know is that Werner Diermaier, Joachim Irmler, Jean-Hervé Peron, Rudolf Sosna, Gunther Wüsthoff, and Arnulf Meifurt all appear on this CD, a worthy addition to any fan's collection, especially for the radio session. ~ François CoutureAlternative Press (2/02, p.75) - 8 out of 10 - "...Amazing stuff for 1972, and still amazing..." BBC Sessions + album
$13.95 Adrian and Paul Gurvitz might be better known for their travels with Ginger Baker in the Baker Gurvitz Army, but in the late '60s the brothers helmed the heavy rock trio Gun and caught a whiff of success in the U.K. with their debut single "Race with the Devil." Using the less-ethnic surname Curtis, Adrian (guitar) and Paul (bass) teamed up with drummer Louis Farrell and pounded out some distinctive ...

It's taken America a long time to come around to the magic of '60s/'70s troubadour Tim Buckley. During his tragically brief, incredibly prolific lifetime, Buckley proved to be a truly eclectic visionary, careening madly from folk-rock to boldly experimental work to quirky R&B and more. His unearthly, ...

| | Regina Spektor Begin To Hope CDs (2006) Limited Edition
BBC Sessions + music CDs
$18.75 BEGIN TO HOPE finds anti-folk chanteuse Regina Spektor taking a small step away from piano balladry into the brave new world of the pop song. And what pop songs they are. Spektor's voice takes the foreground over sparse arrangements of guitars, strings, some electronic beats, and yes, piano. Her singing, if you can believe it, is even better than it was on SOVIET KITSCH: intimate, playful, and full of jazzy phrasings. She slips effortlessly into falsetto and scat in a manner reminiscent of Joni Mitchell. "Hotel Song" finds Spektor singing whispery and smooth over humming organs and a muted snare drum. In "On The Radio," she sings about hearing G'N'R's "November Rain" while plucked strings and synth arpeggios go noodling on behind her. ...

| | Wilfred N & the Grown Men Stop Go Romeo CD (2009)
BBC Sessions + album
$16.45 It took longer than expected, but when you hear the results, you may understand why. Edmonton's Wilfred N & the Grown Men present their seventh studio album - Stop Go Romeo - likely their best release to date. It's their first new cd since 2004's well-loved Waiting For Luck To Come. And it has been 25 years since WNGM's debut album 'Riding Double' spawned the still popular 'Sad New Day'. Undeniably Wilfred Kozub's most ambitious project yet, Stop Go Romeo reads like a trip through an ordinary person's life diary, flaws and all. And what a trip. In the beginning, there's the cautious optimism of 'Don't Worry (It's Still A Beautiful World)' - a great song, by the way, and one that could strike a chord with radio listeners everywhere - with an uplifting vibe that belies its world-weary message. 'There's Nothing Wrong With Me' lures you in with a slinky shuffle and some of the most interesting lyrics Kozub has written to date. One of the real gems on this album is 'I Like To Go Fast' which finds Wilfred N & the Grown Men in a bit of a time warp. On this song, co-producer Nik Kozub (Shout Out Out Out Out) revamped the original drum track, bringing a new exuberance to the version that Wilfred originally brought into the studio. After the psychedelic '(I Love My) Bento Box', you may feel guilty about ever eating sushi again. Sorry. More than any other ...
