Diddy's slippage since his name change, it might have made some sense to greet Evans' third album, Faithfully, with a bit of skepticism. As it turns out, such doubts were unwarranted, since this is her grittiest, funkiest, best record to date. There are so many collaborators on each track and so many producers -- usually around five songwriters for each track (but if a song is sampled, as many as 14 writers are credited) -- that it seems a minor miracle that it holds together at all, but Faithfully gels better than any previous Faith Evans record, in large part because so much of it is devoted to hard-edged, funky dance numbers, whether it's hip-hop-influenced cuts like "Alone in This World" or the wonderful neo-disco "Back to Love." This switch from her previous album, which emphasized ballads and mid-tempo grooves, gives the album more character, since the dance numbers mix well with the sultrier numbers and they both work equally well. If the album is hurt by anything, it's its length -- like most modern hip-hop-related albums, it runs too long -- but it is rich with vibrant songs, lively production, and Evans' best singing to date on what ultimately is not just her best album, but another excellent female urban R&B album in a year overflowing with them. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine Even after many other factions abandoned the artist formerly known as Puff Daddy, Faith Evans continues to stand by her man on the appropriately titled FAITHFULLY. She still makes her home on Bad Boy Records, and the newly christened P. Diddy takes his rightful place masterminding the project and guesting on "You Gets No Love." Throughout the album, Evans reiterates the reasons why she deserves the title "first lady of hip-hop." Though she's a dyed-in-the-wool R&B songbird, FAITHFULLY is a perfect example of how an album can be R&B and hip-hop simultaneously. Even beyond the contributions of guest rappers (including Loon as well as the aforementioned Mr. Diddy), there's such a strong sense of hip-hop urgency in the beats and production style that there's no question where Evans's musical heart lies.

Evans creates a masterpiece album with FAITHFULLY Faith Evans shines brighter than the best with her 3rd album, Faithfully. Her gospel-drenched, velvety smooth voice makes its presence in both lead and backgound vocals, and in a rapping scheme in the first single "You Gets No Love." Evans, and husband/manager Todd Russaw, co-produced the album and she co-wrote on all 18 tracks. Standouts include the 2nd single "I Love You," "Brand New Man," "Heaven Only Knows," and "Do Your Time." Faithfully exemplifies a non-traditional blend of Soul, Gospel, Jazz, and Hip-Hop together in the year's finest R&B album and Evans' finest work to date. | | Don Williams Best Of CD (1979) (Import) Germany
Faithfully
$9.69 2003 collection from this long standing giant of country, includes all nine of his hits during his RCA tenure. 18 tracks. Camden.
This best-of collection culls from country star Don Williams's work for RCA, and includes 18 tracks, nine of which were hits. Most performers warrant a single-volume greatest-hits package. Legends sometimes get two depending on whether or not there was a major division in their career or they switched labels. Don Williams has three and he needs it. Here's the kicker: Volume 2 is a better collection than Volume 1 was. There are 11 tracks here, and they capture Williams at the absolute peak of his powers, the mid- to late '70s. While it's easy to complain that a track or two were left off or one was included that shouldn't have been, Williams satisfies all the arguments here by issuing the cuts that sold the best as singles, from "Love Me Tonight" and the Williams Halyfied classic "'Till the Rivers All Run Dry" to "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend," "Rake and Ramblin' Man," "Falling in Love," "I've Got a Winner in You," "Say It Again," "Tulsa Time," "She Never Knew Me," and others, all but one produced by Williams ("Tulsa Time" is Williams and Garth Fundis). In sum, this is the sound Williams would patent and others would work so hard to copy in the 1980s. Cats like Johnny Lee, David Frizzell, Ronnie McDowell, and countless others ended up sounding like crummy pop singers while ...
