Hot on the heels of their Mink Car album and their success with the Malcolm in the Middle theme comes They Might Be Giants' Holidayland EP, which collects the holiday-themed songs that John Linell and John Flansburgh have recorded over the years. Longtime TMBG fans will recognize "Santa's Beard" from Lincoln or Then: The Earlier Years, and the song's quirky-yet-rockin' sound captures the appeal of the group's late-'80s/early-'90s work perfectly. The sweetly spare toy piano and drum machine-based "Feast of Lights" originally appeared on the Chanukah compilation Festival of Light, Vol. 2, while "Careless Santa" comes from Unsupervised, the debut album from Flansburgh's side project Mono Puff. The group's version of "O Tannenbaum" -- sung in German, natch -- also achieves the blend of braininess and warm fuzzies of TMBG's best work. Unfortunately, the EP's newest track, a cover of the Sonics' "Santa Claus," is also the most unremarkable, but overall Holidayland will please the They Might Be Giants fans who don't already own these fun, festive songs. ~ Heather Phares

Entertainment Weekly (11/30/01, p.90) - "...The highlight here is the previously released 'Santa's Beard,' a key entry in the slim subgenre of songs about Santa as a sexual interloper..." - Rating: B They Might Be Giants Holidayland Songs Holidayland Review

When They Might Be Giants first appeared in the late '80s, it was hard to predict that the whimsical alt-rock duo would still be going strong over a dozen years later. However, MINK CAR stands as further proof of the band's staying power, mostly attributable to the endlessly inventive songcraft ...

| | Moonbabies Orange Billboard CD (2004)
Holidayland CD music
$13.79 Will the indie pop melody well ever run dry? Maybe, but in the meantime Moonbabies have busted the pipeline, and it's overflowing in their basement. Harmony, warm melody, and clever studio trickery color every inch of The Orange Billboard, Ola Frick and Carina Johansson's second full-length; its songs seem stung by a pinpoint of heat and filtered through a long prism, their elementary pop structure and crackling electronica jumbled into a dizzy rainbow of bewildering detachment. Are these people from Sweden or some kind of super-hip Candy Land? The verses of "Fieldtrip USA" run on a gentle acoustic guitar figure and what sounds like a sound effect from the Windows operating system; the image blisters, snaps, and blurs before downshifting Notwist-like into a pulsating indie rock bass groove. "Sun A.M." is even better, a blissfully perfect synthesis of sun-kissed twee and mouse-click bedroom electronica. "I become you," Frick sings in his cracked, plaintive falsetto. "Just wait and see us/Nine years from here/And I follow you." And what's senseless in print is butterflies-inducing genius in the studio. "Crime o' the Moon" bounces along on a jaunty organ and xylophone chimes, inserting snippets of strings in a 21st century rebroadcast of Beatles psychedelia, while the instrumental "Jet" is a whirring and ...

In 1987, when still in high school, he was severely bitten by the jazz bug. Two years later he moved to the University of New Orleans to pursue his love of jazz where jazz was born. At UNO, he studied piano and composition with legends Ellis Marsalis and Harold Battiste. It was there that he first played with Wynton Marsalis, James Rivers, Wes Anderson and Nycholas Payton. 'My time in New Orleans, studying with Ellis and Harold by day and playing in clubs almost every night was an unparalleled stage in my development. I cherish that time in my life'Before heading for New York, producer/composer Battiste released his first jazz CD, 'Comment' on AFO Records. Battiste says, 'His credentials as composer, producer, arranger, leader and player ...
