Tommy Ellison songs
$7.95 Thoroughly charming and totally hilarious day-in-the-life comedy in which co-writer Ice Cube plays the stoic Craig opposite Chris Tucker's Smokey, a brilliantly rendered hyperactive marijuana enthusiast. The two twentysomethings, Craig recently wrongly fired and Smokey terminally slacking and scamming, barely make it through one ...

| | Psykosonik CD (1993)
Tommy Ellison CD music
$13.99 Chicago-based Wax Trax Records has been the home of industrial music semi-legends such as My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult and Ministry. However, Psykosonik takes a decidedly different approach. The photogenic quartet released its self-titled debut album in 1993; at the time, the "rave" scene was slowly inching its way into the mainstream, with bands like Utah Saints and 2 Unlimited softening the harsher underground-techno elements and finding minor success. Psykosonik's sound has its share of techno flourishes and blow-out-the-speakers synth effects, but the hook-heavy release proves Psykosonik is definitely a pop band at heart.
The singles "Welcome to My Mind" and "Silicon Jesus," included here, are actually no different in style and spirit than EMF's left-field hit "Unbelievable," released just a couple of years earlier. But Psykosonik's release came at a time when Nirvana and Green Day ruled the airwaves, solidifying flash in the pan status for poppy techno bands like EMF and Jesus Jones. Psykosonik's chance to hit the big time was slim, which is a shame; both "Welcome to my Mind" and "Silicon Jesus" are A-1 pop songs, with infectious hooks and spirited arrangements.
The rest of Psykosonik suffers from artistic pretension; ...
| | Ultimate Cal Tjader CD (1999)
Tommy Ellison music CDs
$12.99 Recorded between 1961 and 1967. Includes liner notes by Eddie Palmieri and Bob Blumenthal.
Verve's Ultimate series unveils a new idea in the hackneyed concept of greatest-hits collections: instead of compilation producers, these albums feature tracks selected by figures who either worked with or were influenced by the artists themselves. The results are much more than your average best-of compilations; they're closer to treatises on the immense influence those artists exerted on generations to come, documenting exactly why they were special and deserve to be remembered. Cal Tjader's Ultimate compilation was selected by Eddie Palmieri, a long-time friend of Tjader and his co-leader on two LPs, El Sonido Nuevo and Cal Tjader & Eddie Palmieri (only the former was released on Verve). Appropriately, the compilation focuses on Tjader's hottest sides, from albums like In a Latin Bag, Soul Burst, and El Sonido Nuevo ("Guajira en Azul," "Picadillo," and Palmieri's own "Ritmo Uni"). For listeners wanting a brief summation of why Tjader meant so much to mainstream Latin-jazz, it's a solid compilation. The only caveat is PolyGram's inability to include tracks from the many excellent LPs Tjader recorded for Fantasy. ~ John ...

| | Superiority Complex Stand Up CD (2006)
Tommy Ellison CD music
$12.69 For once a press release gets things right. The one giving notice of this fine effort from Orlando-based Superiority Complex sums up the album quite nicely, calling it "lyrical, melodious, witty, hard-hitting, and just plain fun." While there would seem to be a contradiction in the statement, regarding the labels of hard-hitting and just plain fun, it's this very contradiction that makes Stand Up so interesting. Emcees Iron Monk and Poisoned Fetus offer up weird, often artsy, and sometimes ultra-violent wordplay in the finest tradition of Kool Keith and MF Doom. Underneath, Monk and Blackology's cool beats and warped samples ground and then elevate the album into the stratosphere. Like so many of their peers, Superiority Complex smack down lots of other artists while proclaiming their own prowess, but it's done in a tongue-in-cheek manner. One song has them seething with hatred at the entire world, with a final shout-out at the end of "I love you Mom" and some giggles. Elsewhere, unexpected transfigurations of Phil Collins and Vince Guaraldi gurgle melodically, adding depth and twisted glee to the proceedings. Smart, confident, and subversive, Stand Up is a promising early highlight in the careers of its participants. ~ Tim DiGravina
Poisoned Fetus is your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. His delivery is impeccable, his breath control, mastery of cadence, and exploitation of verbal rhythms make you wonder if he has a third lung. Iron Monk is one part Flavor Flav, one part Common, and the other part we still haven't figured out what it is. Blackology is the prodigy composer whose soundscapes provide the perfect backdrop for the sound called "Superiority Complex"Superiority Complex is originally from Arkansas, but now makes its home in Orlando, Florida. With a number of previous underground releases and a solid track record of 4 years constantly performing, ...
| | White Stripes White Blood Cells CD (2001)
Tommy Ellison music CDs
$9.59 In an age where rock is becoming progressively more slick and studio enhanced, it's quite refreshing to see a band like White Stripes come up from the underground and play raw, sloppy, and soulful rock & roll the way it was meant to be played--straight out of the garage. On the Stripes' third album WHITE BLOOD CELLS, their songwriting and playing has become more focused and slightly more accessible than on their earlier releases (1999's self titled debut and 2000's DE STIJL). This is evidenced by such selections as "The Same Boys You've Always Known" and "We're Going to be Friends." But White Stripes' earlier direction can still be detected on several cuts, most noticeably on ...
