On the band's second album, Blue Screen Life, Pinback redefines its classic emo sound into something lush and personal. Quirky pop harmonies swirl into indie rock bliss and sweeping acoustics explore the bandmembers' grand air as they make a sound for themselves. Songs such as "Boo" and "XIY" showcase Pinback's growing musicianship and an intelligence similar to the likes of Built to Spill and Elliott Smith. "Prog" and "West" are both sweetly tainted with delicate percussion arrangements and hushing vocals -- however, it's not incredibly outstanding. Blue Screen Life is a progression for Pinback, and internal complexities inside the band's songs are quite obvious. It's not unique or brilliant; it's a healthy dose of Pinback's satisfaction in keeping things simple -- lyrically and musically. ~ MacKenzie Wilson

Pinback Blue Screen Life Songs Blue Screen Life Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Music for those going nowhere Pinback again creates interesting, nuanced music. As with their first, self-titled disk, Pinback's combination of sounds is ideal theme music for listening to alone or hanging out with friends when you are going absolutely nowhere. Blue Screen Life operates on the postmodern notion that life is a text. Blue Screen Life creates a cool, casual, at times, intriguing aural canvas the listener most certainly enjoy interpreting. great soothing music This cd is much better than their previous album. the third song, boo, is my jammy jam. one singer's soaring voice is peppered throughout the songs, but it doesnt define the vocals, like some bands (death cab for cutie, dashboard confessional) Its really beautiful in parts. some songs can be annoying but thats true of many great albums. the couple excellent ones are worth the whole package. except the lyrics arent really THAT great. but so what. interesting, beautiful music all around. a mix of excellent and listenable There are some stellar tracks on this album, but the rest are just kind of boring, pleasant tunes. Worth investing in at a good used price. Submitted by a reviewer (Boston, MA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Reminded me of Yes. This band was recommended by a friend who just can stop listening to it. Maybe the build up was too much to live up to for me. I think it is very good music, and reminds me of the 70's music of Yes updated. Submitted by a reviewer (Phoenix,AZ) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One worth resurrecting again, and again, and again! This cd is melodic yet dancy? I find that when I put it on and turn it up loud it alters my mood into something very sweet and yet sad in some way that I can't put my finger on. It's a fabulous one to start with if you are not familiar with Pinback, yet all of them are great. Submitted by inthissubbacultcha (Long Beach, Calif) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Pinback Offcell CD (2003)
Blue Screen Life CD music
$8.09 Rob Crow and Armistead B. Smith IV continue to create complex indie pop with smart, subtle structures on Pinback's Offcell. Vocal tracks harmonize, electronics punctuate, guitars punch clean, key changes shift quickly, and syncopated drums all swirl in the thick instrumentation, giving Offcell many dimensions. The members of Pinback write their own material that covers different areas, including the ...
| | Broken Social Scene You Forgot It In People CD (2002) (Import) Canada
Blue Screen Life music CDs
$10.39 Nothing less than an indie-rock milestone, this is what happens when a number of musicians from the Canadian post-rock scene (including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Do Make Say Think) abandon their extended-jam conceptualizing in favor of short, optimistic, pop-oriented songs. Things start out in a jazzy, bass-heavy space before morphing into "KC Accidental," a guitar-layered track that sounds like the Allman Brothers covering Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot." Catchy hooks triplicate alongside hand clapping, fuzz guitar, and Brendan Canning's whispered vocals on "Stars and Sons," while the mellow, ...

| | Richie Havens Dreaming As One: The A&M Years CD (2004)
Blue Screen Life album
$16.79 Richie Havens (guitar/harmonica/vocals) established himself as a formidable folkie during the 1960s Greenwich Village scene. This was prior to becoming a household name after a career-defining appearance at the Woodstock Music and Arts Fair. After releasing seven acclaimed long-players on his own Stormy Forest label, a series of business maneuvers led to Havens' next two platters being issued on A&M Records. The contents of those discs, The End of the Beginning ...
| | Love As Laughter Laughter's Fifth CD (2005)
Blue Screen Life CD music
$11.75 Love as Laughter kind of meandered to a pause after 2001's fabulous Sea to Shining Sea. But that's not the same thing as being inactive. Sam Jayne put together a solo album and moved to New York City, where he got to performing troubadour-like quite regularly. While LAL were away, a lot of people started noticing the Shins -- another Sub Pop band making literate, charmingly weary little songs -- and those same listeners will love Laughter's Fifth. (Naturally, the veteran Jayne aficionados don't need to be cajoled.) Fifth isn't as loud as Sea. It has those moments -- the rich, ringing-out chords of "I Won't Hurt You," for example. But "In Amber" and "Idol Worship! Idol Worship!" are instead shaggy pop songs tweaked with knowing bents toward gettin' older and bein' cynical. The latter starts out with just Jayne and his acoustic before he's joined by chirping organ and some great layers of electric guitar. By the times the drums kick in, the song's transformed itself into a loose, good-naturedly stomping rocker of the sort Ryan Adams might never write again. Jayne doesn't wow you with grand lyrical imagery. He doesn't even have that great of a singing voice. But his skills work wonders nevertheless, letting him mask a song's gravity behind tousled, self-cut bangs or an easygoing pat on the back. "Every Midnight Song" is like that. It sneaks up on you, and not only because it starts with just the gentlest of notes. "Every midnight song," Jayne begins with a breath, ...
