Pianist Jean-Michel Pilc showed lots of promise with his early recordings, so the idea to pair him with the veteran bassist Hein Van De Geyn was an inspired one. The chemistry gels immediately as they tackle Miles Davis' "Nardis," which is almost always identified with Bill Evans because of the legendary pianist's many recordings of this modal classic. The duo has their own way of building upon the eerie mood inherent within the piece while resisting the rapid tempos which Evans preferred. Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" is more obtuse with Pilc only playing brief snatches as Van De Geyn's catlike bassline weaves around him. Standards like "Alice in Wonderland," "My Funny Valentine," and "My Foolish Heart" are all approached from unlikely angles, often sounding much darker than their original composers intended. Pilc's original compositions are equally intriguing but take longer to appreciate, especially the dense but hypnotic "The Long Journey." Recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Jean-Michel Pilc Welcome Home CD (2002) (Import) France
Long Journey CD music
$15.75 On his first disc for the Dreyfus label, Jean-Michel Pilc keeps his regular trio intact and continues to work maniacal wonders, mostly with standards. Beginning with a fast and playful "So What," Pilc, bassist François Moutin, and drummer Ari Hoenig toss the familiar figure back and forth, stretching it wildly while preserving the integrity of the form. Duke Ellington and John Coltrane each get a double nod, the former with sparse yet off-kilter readings of "I Got It Bad" and "Solitude," the latter with short, back-to-back deconstructions ...
| | Jason Moran Modernistic CD (2002)
Long Journey music CDs
$12.49 Piano virtuoso Jason Moran has made a stunning artistic statement with MODERNISTIC. While Moran's BLACK STARS (featuring the great avant-garde saxophonist Sam Rivers) and THE BANDWAGON (a live outing) find him playing ably with a crack team of musicians, MODERNISTIC is pure solo piano. Aside from having prodigious technical skills (he employs dense flourishes, exquisite sensitivity to space, and punk-styled aggression), Moran has an all-encompassing imagination, as ...
| | Tierney Sutton Something Cool CD (2002)
Long Journey songs
$11.35 This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players.
Tierney Sutton warms the soul with Something Cool. This offering, her third as a leader for the Telarc label, finds the vocalist using an array of vocal techniques, jazz styles, and formats on 14 great songs by several Great American Songbook composers, Bobby Troup, and the masterful Duke Ellington. Sutton is accompanied by her longtime trio of Christian Jacob on piano, Trey Henry on bass, and Ray Brinker on drums. The lovely vocalist/educator charms her listeners with elongated phrasings, a strong rhythmic sense, and amazing improvisational abilities on three Lerner & Loewe themes from the Broadway musical My Fair Lady. In addition to the outstanding vocal treatments she offers her listeners on these classic songs, Sutton scats and swings through an amazing "Ding, Dong! The Witch Is Dead." This song not only shows ...

Long Journey songs
$9.59 VIRTUOSI was nominated for the 2003 Grammy Awards for Best Classical Crossover Album.
This CD features Gary Burton's vibes and Makoto Ozone's piano in ten classical duos with jazz improvisations. The two styles have never merged with more soul, spirit, or, well, virtuosity, and the material is rich and varied enough to please fans of both. It begins with one of Maurice Ravel's most popular compositions, Le Tombeau de Couperin, which in these masterful hands sparkles as it flows, reminding listeners why Ravel's harmonies inspired so many jazz musicians. The collection includes a thunderous Rachmaninoff prelude leavened with swing and a Latin feel, a Brazilian take on Brahms, the ...

| | Sylvain Luc Ambre (Solo) CD (2005) (Import) France
Long Journey music CDs
$15.79 Acoustic guitarist Sylvain Luc makes a breathtaking solo recording that finds this critically acclaimed world jazz guitarist in an elegant and deeply nuanced setting. Known for his ability to bring a reflective, delicate quality to any composition, Luc is not only romantic in his improvisations but brings a solid sense of jazz swing to Ambre. By recording in multi-track with multiple guitars: nylon, steel, and the rarely heard fretless guitar, Luc achieves beautiful accompaniment on such great songs as "A Child Is Born,""All Blues," and "Ambre." By tuning the E and A strings an octave lower on electric guitar and electric-acoustic guitar, Sylvain Luc offers his audience bass accompaniment on part one of "A Child Is Born." The deeper resonance adds a hearty dimension to this beloved jazz standard. The melody on the second part of the same song is approached by using ...
