The Cure were never afraid of artistically defining themselves. They had their own sound, an eerie glamour surrounding a dark whimsicality, yet fans flocked to them throughout the '80s and '90s. Commercial or cult favorites, they're impressive as being one of the '80s' seminal bands who culled more than 30 critical singles. Compilations like 1986's Staring at the Sea: The Singles and 1997's Galore showcased the Cure's accessibility; therefore, having a solid greatest-hits collection might be a bit nonessential. Then again, releasing an album like this at the tip of the new millennium calls for a celebration, and that's what the Cure did. They collected 16 amazing cuts which spanned 23 years and recall what once was. From the saucy synth strut of "The Walk" and the cabaret stylings of "The Lovecats" to the lilting swan songs of "Lovesong" and "Just Like Heaven," the Cure's ever-changing moods were switched up for something desirable and blissful. They are selectively classic, leaving this package to be its own storybook of sorts. The Cure did treat the fans with two new songs: "Cut Here" rises with early sounds of Madchester, but the glitzy swirls of "Just Say Yes" mark the Cure's return to form. Republica's Saffron joins Robert Smith for something campy and carefree. Greatest Hits is basically for the fans who have to have everything, but also a decent collection for those who never fully enraptured themselves with the Cure. ~ MacKenzie Wilson
By way of distinguishing GREATEST HITS from the other Cure collections on the market, let's first note that most of the doom and gloom for which the band is often derided is largely absent here due to the disinclusion of most of their early material. The bulk of this disc is devoted to mid-period cure classics such as the simultaneously innocent and randy "Let's Go to Bed," the breathless, horn-driven "Close to Me," and the bouncy, jazz-tinged "The Lovecats." To prove that the Cure didn't peter out after the Reagan era, GH reminds us that the transcendently effervescent pop gem "Friday I'm in Love" and the hard-driving rocker "Never Enough" stand as tall as the group's earlier efforts. A couple of attractive new tunes are tacked on for the benefit of those who've already got everything else here.
By way of distinguishing GREATEST HITS from the other Cure collections on the market, let's first note that most of the doom and gloom for wQ (12/01, p.154) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Everything here attests to their consistency, invention and singularity....the real buying incentive is a limited-edition bonus CD featuring the hits in spartan, acoustic guise..."
Q (12/01, p.154) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Everything here attests to their consistency, invention and singularity....the real buying incentive is a limited-edition bonus CD featuring the hits in spartan, acoustic guise..."
Alternative Press (01/02, p.76) - 9 out of 10 - "...A reminder that the Cure doesn't simply make great records. They write great songs as well..."

5 stars 80's Classic for any collection
This cd contains all the hits of the Cure from the begining till the end. It will make you feel like it is 1983 again as you listen to the songs. Well worth the money spent.

3 stars great band, ok cd...
There's another version of this with a second disc that contains all the tracks in acoustic. However, If you don't know much about the cure, I wouldn't recommend this. The Cure has two sounds on their albums. One is a happy pop sound and the other is a more depressing sound. This only represents their happy sound. It's missing most of their best work. I would recommend the albums "Disintegration" and "Pornography" followed by "Faith". This is a great band. Don't buy their greatest hits, just get everything else!

4 stars cure....
this is a good cd for people who don't really know the cure very well, or just want singles, I have all the cure's releases, some in multiple forms, this is by far not the best and not the worst.

2 stars Talk about milking a dead cow...
If you like the stuff that actually made the radio, then by all means buy this disc. If you like the stuff that made the radio but want to go a little deeper, then skip these and go straight to the other and much more complete "Staring at the Sea" and Galore collections. Classics such as "Primary," "The Caterpillar," "Fascination Street" and "Catch" defined this group, even though they never made the Top 40. Robert, I'm ashamed you let this come to market.

from Neumu.netCool, classicist familiars - The Pearlfishers, Heavy Blinkers, Camera Obscura and the Young Tradition among them - would have you believe that elegant has always been the apt imprimatur for pop music. And you, caught up in the headiness of Brill Building co-writes, banquette reserve and delicate, orchestral accompaniments, might impulsively decide that nothing could compare. You would be wrong of course. Le Concorde are equally edifying in their heart-whole sleekness, a perfect measure of sincere, modern craft and late-'80s eloquence.Le Concorde are Stephen Becker's former Chicago indie-pop band Post Office in present tense. The previous lineup included Becker (guitar, voice), Larry O. Dean (guitar, voice), Jeff Greaves (drums, voice) and Jerry Morrow (bass, voice). Post Office released two records, Public Displays of Affection and Fables in Slang, in 1997 and 2001 respectively, on local label Spade Kitty Records. Adroitly associated (the dB's Chris Stamey produced the lauded sophomore effort) and keenly influenced (Tommy Keene, dB's, the Plimsouls, Velvet Crush, Sneakers, The Kinks and Shoes, to start), Post Office were jangly, smart and unwilling to concede the middling pop music signifiers: humorless, kitschy, bubble gum without melody.Le Concorde are similarly well appointed. Becker has assembled an ideal, largely local collaborative for this affectionate six-song effort, recalling the nascent shimmer of electronic keyboards, ardent songwriting, and how pretty it was to think so. Allure and simplicity are found (again) in the mannered design of Aztec Camera, Prefab Sprout and Stephen Duffy.Joining Becker in part are John Ashton and Mars Williams of the Psychedelic Furs, Eric Chial (the Bon Mots), Mark Ruggiero (Light FM) and Phil Angotti (The Idea). Epicycle, the moniker of brothers Ellis and Tom Clark, produce and back the ensemble. Known for solicitous, layered arrangements and an apprised ear, the Clarks' production renders nuanced yet appreciable shadings, including singer/songwriter ...
