In 2006, Mastodon followed up its magnum opus, LEVIATHAN, with a collection of early recordings entitled CALL OF THE MASTODON. Although fans of the adventurous Georgia-based metal band may have been initially disappointed at the lack of a new studio album, CALL admirably reveals the group's beginnings by presenting the crushingly heavy LIFESBLOOD EP in its entirety, along with other formative tracks such as the mammoth "Deep Sea Creature," which pummels listeners with pile-driving rhythms, unrelenting riffage, and throat-shredding vocals. CALL shows that as monumentally heavy as the band would become, Mastodon were never anything less. this is one of the craziest albums my ears have had the pleasure of listening to, crazy heavy riffs in every song, it really is one of those albums that make you want to slam your head against a concrete wall and feel good about it, as for the other review that said "fell asleep" through it, you must of taken like, 60 sleeping pills trying to kill your sorry coward emo self, because NO ONE could fall asleep to this album, if this album came on my ipod while i was asleep, I'm pretty sure i would head-bang myself awake without relising it.

Terrific piledriving metal from one of the most technically superb bands around. Long may they stomop. And about the one-star review below -- it's amazing monkeys can type legibly, isn't it?

My god this is horrid to my ears. I fell alseep twice during it, then I had to shut it off!! I mean come on, what band did you ever hear of that only sings about a stupid whale? No life I guess.
