Featuring vocals on every song for the first time in his career, O'Rourke makes a virtue of his somewhat thin voice in much the same way that James Mercer of the Shins does, by delivering his sometimes elliptical lyrics in an offhand, conversational tone that fits surprisingly well with the elaborate arrangements of songs such as the title track and "Get A Room." Where EUREKA sounded heavily influenced by Van Dyke Parks and the more baroque end of 1960s sunshine pop, INSIGNIFICANCE is a scrappier album, featuring more of the electric guitar assault that first made Jim O'Rourke's name.
Jim O'Rourke's second full-length solo album for Drag City has a similarly odd and vividly colored cartoon cover as 1999's EUREKA, but while it takes the pop experimentation of that album as a starting point, INSIGNIFICANCE goes considerably farther. This is Jim O'Rourke's most conventional indie rock album by some distance, with none of the 15-minute solo guitar instrumentals or noise experiments that colored his earlier albums.
Personnel includes: Jim O'Rourke, Tim Barnes, Darin Gray, Glenn Kotche, Jeff Tweedy, Rob Mazurek, Ken Vandermark, Ken Champion.
Spin (3/02, p.137) - 7 out of 10 - "...INSIGNIFICANCE looks to '70s AOR....avoiding orchestration allow[s] the songs to breathe like old Creedence tunes..." Uncut (1/03, p.96) - Ranked #38 in Uncut's "100 Best Albums of the Year" - "...One of rock's more gifted artists..." Mojo (Publisher) (2/02, p.92) - "...He comes across like Bill Callahan [of Smog] in an unusually animated mood....spontaneous pop music which is melodic and accessible..." NME (Magazine) (1/19/02, p.27) - 8 out of 10 - "...A work of unparalleled individual brilliance....It's the first unequivocal classic album of the new year..." | | Faith Hill Breathe CD (1999)
Insignificance CD music
$10.29 Faith Hill won the 2000 CMA Award for Female Vocalist Of The Year.
BREATHE won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Album. "Breathe" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocal Performance. "Let's Make Love" won the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals. "Breathe" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award in the categories of Best Country Song and Song Of The Year. "The Way You Love Me" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Country Song.
With her third album, FAITH, Faith Hill tasted pop crossover success--and she evidently liked the taste. BREATHE, Hill's fourth release, takes the pop/country stylings of FAITH to the next level. It's an appealing collection of pop, gospel, R&B, rock, and ballads, with just a bit of country thrown in. The production, featuring Hill's big voice surrounded by booming drums and screaming guitars, is so slick you could skate on it.
Love is the subject of nearly every song, ...
| | Interpol Turn On The Bright Lights CD (2002)
Insignificance music CDs
$10.29 To make music marked distinctly of a specific period that's somehow so compelling as to be timeless is no mean feat. Interpol initially sounds as if they must have been roaming about Manchester as the 1970s screamed to a close, yet they emerged across the ocean in New York City some two decades-plus later. Combining the insistent drone of Joy Division with the dreamy melodies of the Chameleons, the fire of Mission of Burma, and an occasional jagged edge a la The Fall, the foursome inconceivably manage to defy anachronism on their debut full-length TURN ON THE BRIGHT LIGHTS. Just how they do ...
| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Insignificance songs
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But ...
| | Pavement Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: L.A.'s Desert Origins CDs (1994)
Insignificance album
$15.09 The 10-year-anniversary deluxe edition of CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN is a Pavement fan's dream come true. It feature no less than 37 (!) bonus tracks over the course of its two discs. Some are studio outtakes, some are alternate versions, others are rare B-sides, but all hail from the CROOKED RAIN era and underscore the degree to which the band was firing on all cylinders at the time.
Tuneful without being soft, confident without being pompous, hip without being inaccesible, CROOKED RAIN, CROOKED RAIN was a huge leap for Pavement up the rock & roll evolution cycle. They may have gained some pop smarts, but a casual listen to the dissonant guitar solo of "Cut Your Hair" proves that the seeds planted with 1989's first SLAY TRACKS EP have come to their ...
| | Sufjan Stevens Illinois CD (2005)
Insignificance CD music
$12.09 The second entry from sui generis singer/songwriter Sufjan Stevens in his absurdly ambitious project to make a record for every state in America outdistances even 2003's superb GREETINGS FROM MICHIGAN in scope and beauty. A sweeping paean to the Lincoln state, ILLINOIS weaves together history, personal confession, and detail-filled scenarios with chamber folk, expansive orchestral pop, and back-porch pastoral settings for a stunningly progressive indie gem that sound like Brian Wilson, Stereolab, and Neil Young holding hands in heaven.
Remarkably, in its intricate, gorgeously crafted surfaces, ILLINOIS lives up to its aims. In addition to its symphonic grandeur, the ...

Insignificance music CDs
$10.09 The 1997 release of FROM THE BEGINNING contains 5 additional tracks that were not contained on the original release.
Another remastering of a classic piece of mid-'60s British rock & soul, and as important and enjoyable a record as, say, the Beatles' Rubber Soul or the Stones' Aftermath, even if the album itself was slapped together by Decca in an effort to undercut the band's first new release for rival Immediate Records in 1967. Steve Marriott's honest, agonized cover of the Del Shannon classic "Runaway" almost makes up for the fact that neither Otis Redding nor Marvin Gaye ever got around to applying their ...
