Dntel: Jimmy Tamborello. Additional personnel: Chris Gunst, Mia Doi Todd, Meredith Figurine, Rachel Haden, Benjamin Gibbard (vocals); Paul Larson, Brian McMahan (guitar). Composer: Dntel. Personnel: Brian McMahan (vocals, guitar); Chris Gunst, Mia Doi Todd, Rachel Haden, Ben Gibbard (vocals); Paul Larson (guitar). Recording information: Dying Songs, Los Angeles, CA (2000-2001). Housed behind an entirely appropriate title, the debut album of Dntel (aka Jimmy Tamborello) is a gorgeous, mostly ambient journey into moody, poetic electronic sounds. One imagines these ten songs would make for a delightful, if feverish, score to a kaleidoscopic dream. Though Life Is Full of Possibilities is centered on somewhat standard clicks & cuts, textured sound washes, and cut-and-paste electronic dynamics, Dntel's music contains such pristine melodies and is so effective in its stimulation of one's emotions that it makes for a refreshing, fascinating hour. It's the kind of music Kevin Shields has been threatening to unleash since the collapse of My Bloody Valentine. Dntel is aided more than a bit by his guest vocalists/lyricists, who include Chris Gunst from Beachwood Sparks, Rachel Haden of the defunct That Dog, Benjamin Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, and Brian McMahan from Slint and The for Carnation, among others. When Dntel is at his best, he brings to mind some of the finest European sound collagists, chief among them Múm. Indeed, "Suddenly Is Sooner Than You Think" and "The Dream of Evan and Chan" bear an uncanny resemblance to the superb songs on Múm's Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is Okay. Gibbard's vocals on "The Dream of Evan and Chan" blend with the Múm-like overtones so perfectly that the song is easily one of the mostly touching and beautiful sonic creations of the year. Pretty, brittle, subtle, full of surprises, and disarming in its ability to set moods, Life Is Full of Possibilities is a masterpiece that places Dntel near the top of the heap of electronic artists working in 2001. ~ Tim DiGravinaQ (12/01, p.130) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Wondrous..." | | Norah Jones Feels Like Home CD (2004) With DVD; Deluxe Edition; Digipak; Limited Edition
Life Is Full Of Possibilities
$23.15 This deluxe edition CD/DVD set includes her 13 track album with three bonus tracks plus a DVD mixed in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround of four live tracks filmed earlier this year at the Teatro Nuevo Alcala in Madrid, two music videos, and an exclusive interview.
Personnel: Norah Jones (vocals, piano, Wurlitzer piano); Dolly Parton (vocals); Kevin Breit (guitar, acoustic guitar, banjo); Adam Levy (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Jesse Harris (acoustic guitar); Tony Scherr (electric guitar); Lee Alexander (lap steel guitar, double bass, bass guitar); David Gold (viola); Jane Scarpantoni (cello); Daru Oda (flute, background vocals); Garth Hudson (accordion, Hammond b-3 organ); Rob Burger (field organ); Levon Helm, Andrew Borger, Brian Blade (drums). It may be far too obvious to even mention that Norah Jones' follow-up to her 18-million-unit-selling, eight-Grammy-winning, genre-bending, super-smash album Come Away With Me has perhaps a bit too much to live up to. But that's probably the biggest conundrum for Jones: having to follow up the phenomenal success of an album that was never designed to be so hugely popular in the first place. Come Away With Me was a little album by an unknown pianist/vocalist who attempted to mix jazz, country, and folk in an acoustic setting -- who knew? Feels Like Home could be seen as "Come Away With Me Again" if not for that fact that it's actually better. Smartly following the template forged by Jones and producer Arif Mardin, there is the intimate single "Sunrise," some reworked cover tunes, some interesting originals, and one ostensible jazz standard. These are all good things, for also like its predecessor, Feels Like Home is a soft and amiable album that frames Jones' soft-focus Aretha Franklin voice with a group of songs that are as classy as they are quiet. Granted, not unlike the dippy albeit catchy hit "Don't Know Why," they often portend deep thoughts but come off in the end more like heartfelt daydreams. Of course, Jones could sing the phone book and make it sound deep, and that's what's going to keep listeners coming back. What's surprising here are the bluesy, more jaunty songs that really dig into the country stylings only hinted at on Come Away With Me. To these ends, ...
| | Stray CD (1970) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Life Is Full Of Possibilities
$12.35 These prog-metalists coulda, woulda, shoulda hit big, but it was tough to break with fellow Brits Led Zep standing in their way. That doesn't diminish the power of their music, though, and this self-titled 1970 outing resonates as loudly as virtually any hard rock album released that year. CD contains 5 bonus tracks. Because they were merely precocious teenagers when they'd been signed to a recording contract in the late '60s, the Stray (as they were originally known) probably experienced the golden era of British rock in all of its kaleidoscopic, ...

Visiting the holding pens for African captives during the slave trade there brought on a spiritual awakening. "I was inspired to provide an alternative," says Jackson. "Something that musically could match what's out there but has more social consciousness, more political awareness. I chose Paradise because he has an intense, almost unparalleled talent for spoken word and rap, but I need to emphasize, he has a real positive spirit and he refrains from negativity.""I consider myself Middle School," says Paradise. "Old School flava with New School twist. I want to carry the torch for my generation and follow the path of music from spiritual to blues, soul, R&B, funk and hip hop from this particular Black man's perspective." Indeed, from album opener, How to Be a Black Man in America’s ...
