After a number of singles and EPs, British electronica duo Zero 7 made their full-length debut with 2001's SIMPLE THINGS, an inspired fusion of loungey electronica a la the French duo Air and the more assertive trip-hop of Massive Attack and Tricky. At its heart, SIMPLE THINGS has all the same elements that many similar records have had ever since the early days of Soul II Soul: subtle and inventive sampling, R&B diva vocals, Kraftwerk-like synthesizer chills, and tasteful beats and bass lines to tie the whole thing together. The difference is that Sam Hardaker and Henry Binns, the core of Zero 7, keep those ingredients in precisely the correct proportions. The American edition of SIMPLE THINGS adds two songs, "Salt Water Sound" and "Spinning." Forget the rampant labeling of Zero 7 as the "British Air," because Simple Things is a debut album that stands on its own as a chilled, subtle collection of organic songs. There are hints of Air, but there are equally relevant comparisons that might be made with Morcheeba, Rae & Christian, Nightmares on Wax, and early Massive Attack. Indeed, after Morcheeba's overproduced Fragments of Freedom and Rae & Christian's sloppy Sleepwalking, Simple Things picks up the slack in a rewarding manner. Simple Things might just be a gentle Cinderella, a kind stepsister to Massive Attack's dark masterpiece, Mezzanine. It's rare that a post-trip-hop album is so interesting and engrossing, but the duo of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker mix a number of musical elements, such as soul-influenced diva vocals, gurgling and ringing keyboards, and classical string arrangements, into a relaxing, potent wave of sounds. Though the album starts to meander in its closing tracks, the first 50 minutes are cohesive, vibrant, and calming. Highlights are too numerous to call out, as the duo switches from instrumentals to songs featuring passionate, energized vocals from Mozez, Sia Furler, and Sophie Barker. All three vocalists mingle as perfect matches to the smart arrangements. Twinkling keyboards, barely-there basslines, and acoustic guitars create rolling melodies that never interfere with the task at hand, that of chiseling textured aural atmospheres. Simple Things is an accomplished slice of soulful genius that rewards frequent spins. ~ Tim DiGravina

Zero 7 Simple Things Songs Simple Things Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews I have Seen your Destiny to own this CD in 0-7 minutes First of all, this review is based on a mid to high end hi fi system. It knows how to pick up a good recording, how well the instruments play, the voices etc. I won't comment on every track, but my favourites regarding this CD.
This gem of a CD is one you must listen to especially at night, with all the lights off, away from distractions.
Every part of the song, "destiny" is absolutely spectacular. Make no mistake, every other reviewer enjoys this track, you will also. The lyrics make sense, the timing of each tune is sensational. Zero 7 really took their time producing this masterpiece.
If you don't know why this track is so well known, do yourself a favour. Listen to this song with your eyes shut, picture yourself dancing or flying by yourself very slowly on clouds.
Don't be suprised if you find listening to "In the waiting line" 100's of times. Try this, between pauses of the lyrics, close your eyes, and move your head either side to side, or up/down. It will not take you long to create your own rhythm, but this is definately one of those songs you can sway your head to this tune.
Out of town ? Definately a track to play driving home in the sunset. Picture yourself dressed either to the nines, or in the most suave way possible. Everything you do is right on the money, everyone is in awe of you. This track injects a sophisticated aura to the listener.
If you cannot feel this track in that way, close your eyes and try to take in every note, every instrument, it's timing throughout it's duration. It has a good chance to put lots of inspirational ideas into your mind if it doesn't dissipate your stress levels.
Try to separate each instrument from another within the track. You'll find it too difficult to find one which doesn't belong to the track. Every instrument and note belong like hand in glove.
Spinning, a long track, and it builds slower than the rest, however it is well worth the wait. The way Sophie sings this song, you will be searching hard other songs in this style.
Some songs can feel like wine, they appreciate with age, the last third of this track will make you dance on the inside. Who needs a book to read to unwind, from 4:00 minutes onwards, you'd thank me for this, but you'll be too relaxed in your couch to do so.

Zero7 CD is Terrific You owe it to yourself to get this CD 'Simple Things'. I have listened to this CD 40 times in two weeks and I still like it. Under the genre Techno Blues it is one of the best CD's out there. The vocalist Sia Furler is too hot! Submitted by whymico4 (Dunedin,FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
To Listen to Over and Over I really enjoy this CD. Get it. It will change your life. Everything else said on other reviews is true. It's a great set of music. Submitted by whymico4 (Dunedin, FL) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Nice feeling You get a nice feeling listening to Zero 7, just like AIR. I usually skip the first song on the cd, and a few others. The songs with the female singer are definitely the best, and are songs that nobody should go without hearing. Submitted by Diana (Pennsylvania) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
MUSIC TO LIVE YOUR LIFE TO This CD isn't for everyone. It's actually hard to catagorize the music. No doubt you will never hear it on your neighborhood radio station. For those musically adventurous souls out there, this can be a real treat. It's music to work to; music to work out to; music to put on when friends come over; music to play on a Sunday morning; music to fall asleep to; music to make love to. Open your mind and enjoy this record. Submitted by daitken (Nashville, TN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Each decade has a handful of power pop icons to call its own, each working from the template that the Beatles and the Who constructed in the '60s, adhering to that melodic, guitar-driven sound but subtly updating it to fit the musical and emotional aesthetic of the time. In the '90s, the tradition was kept alive by Teenage Fanclub and Matthew Sweet, who married Big Star and Badfinger to '80s college rock -- there was also Jellyfish, who acted as if the '80s never existed -- and in the 2000s, it's been the New Pornographers, an indie-centric act who fills the Fanclub's spot, and Detroit-based singer/songwriter Brendan Benson, who is this decade's Matthew Sweet. Not that the Sweet-Benson analogy is 100 percent accurate. For one thing, Benson doesn't favor the messy guitars and confessionals that marked Sweet's '90s masterworks Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and 100% Fun, preferring tightly constructed songs and precisely detailed arrangements that emphasize his sweet melodies. Also, where Sweet's music tied neatly into the zeitgeist of the Alternative Nation of the early '90s, Benson's music is deliberately classicist and proudly out of time, belonging neither to the sounds nor the fashion of the 2000s. That is, unless the defining characteristic of this decade truly is smart, sharp revivalism, from the Strokes through ...
