| | Per Mission Ritual Loop CD Per Mission Discography of CDs
With soothing lyrical twists and breathtaking instrumental work, Per Mission comes forth with an honestly mature sophomore release entitled A Ritual Loop. Like its title, the record bursts forth with songs that loop and spin in melodic point and counterpoint to bring complex structures and percussive textures to the forefront. Perhaps the goal of this fine electronic indie rock ensemble was to find a spectacular way to escape from the bandmembers' musically chained barriers and stretch their boundaries. They certainly provide the listener with some music only explored in fresh new territory, revitalizing both the listener and band alike in a call-and-response form. Jason Noble sings with full resonance on the mike, with the support of Rachel Grimes at the instrumental throttle. The messages are deeply realized in the record and carried out with the spirit and enthusiasm of this exuberant group, bringing forth meaning and immediate emotional impact. Hard to digest or register in its first playing, this is a record that matures and gets better with age. ~ Shawn M. Haney

| | Anita O'Day Sings The Winners/At Mister Kelly's CD (1963)
Ritual Loop album
$13.29 This edition of Jazz Track's two-fer series features a pair of LPs by Anita O'Day: Sings the Winners and At Mister Kelly's, both originally issued on Verve in 1958. Highlights among the 23 tracks include "Sing, Sing, Sing (With a Swing)," "What's Your Story, Morning Glory," and "Tea for Two." Casual listeners should pick up Verve Jazz Masters 49 on Verve before delving into these recordings. ~ Al Campbell
For this CD, which is greatly expanded from the original LP, Anita O'Day sings standards associated with other musicians, including "Four" (Miles Davis), "Early Autumn" (Stan Getz), "Four Brothers" (Woody Herman), "Sing, Sing, Sing" (Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa) and "Peanut Vendor" (Stan Kenton). Some of the material is unusual for a singer to interpret, but O'Day, one of the top jazz vocalists of the decade, improvises when the lyrics are not that strong (or barely exist). ...
