Choose Your Own Adventure is the second full-length release from Seattle underground dream pop band the Melody Unit. There is an interesting fairy tale/fantasy tint to this music which is quite unique, particularly to the Seattle music scene. Like a bedtime lullaby, the dual anti-testosterone vocals of Kevin Kelly and Jessica Folsom are dreamy and positive in nature. The band often makes the sea of guitars and synths/keyboards the focal point. Not enough can be said about the orchestration of the melody section c/o Kevin Kelly -- the band pulls off multitudes of layered melody lines colored by endless effects with seemingly effortless grace. The rhythm section drives steadily and there are rarely any rhythmic changes. There can be no mistake that the group is attempting to lull the listener into a comfortable trance-like state. With the help of excellent engineering by Dave Rodgers, this album definitely succeeds in its goal. The Melody Unit are part of a whole new group of post-grunge Seattle bands (Wonderful, Saint Sophia, Spyglass) who favor mood and texture above all else, yet this group has definitely found their own unique signature with this album. ~ Solar Marquardt

Choose Your Own Adventure music CDs
$18.39 This has 20 tracks from her 1964-68 stint with United Artists, concentrating on the ten or so singles she made during that era, with a few LP cuts, a previously unreleased 1964 version of "As Long As You're Happy" (more famous as done by Sandie Shaw), and a rare Ford Cars promotional single. Jones was an okay but not great singer. These sides, some of them anyway, are most noteworthy for the inventive pop/rock-soul-orchestral production, particularly those by Charles Blackwell, who also handled Francoise Hardy and P.J. Proby during the era. Her 1964 debut single, "It's All Because of You," is stunning and strange for the time with its ghostly echoing percussive rattles, ominous melody, and brilliant orchestration; it's like Cilla Black's "You're My World" with more ambition. Francoise Hardy fans should note that the 1965 cuts "Don't Come Any Closer" and "Just Call and I'll Be There" are the English originals of tunes subsequently covered by Hardy in French (as "Non Ce N'est Pas Un Reve," and "Le Temps Des Souvenirs" respectively). The arrangements of Jones' versions are pretty close to the Hardy ones, unsurprisingly since Blackwell was also Hardy's producer, though it must be said that the Hardy covers outclass the originals in both sound and vocals. Also here is the too blatant Phil Spector sound-alike "I Deserve It," recorded in New York in 1965 and arranged by ex-Spector arranger Arnold Goland. Some of the rest is just sufficient period British girl-sung pop, like second-division Dusty Springfield (not that that's such a bad thing). Sometimes the material and settings get quite blue-eyed soulful; the ...

Choose Your Own Adventure album
$14.65 Her appearance on Beenie Man's "Dude" made the song an instant dancehall classic, and now the talented, charisma-overflowing Ms. Thing turns that song's promise into a smoking debut full-length. When it comes to Jamaican riddims, Miss Jamaica grabs the best while coming up with some amazing new sounds of its own. The "Dude" riddim shows up again, this time in the opening "Regular." This talented sing-jay doesn't bother quoting "Dude" again over her flagship riddim, she's too talented and hungry to show it, and "Regular" is proof. "I Want It All" is not only her credo, but also another killer track. Japanese strings spice-up "Jump Up & Rail," ...
