Producer, record executive, and songwriter David Foster has a long history of trying to wed commercial considerations to the lighter elements of pop music, and in young Josh Groban, whom he adopted as a protégé in late 1998 when the singer was 17, he is trying to get in on the classical crossover market effectively occupied by the likes of Andrea Bocelli, Sarah Brightman, and Charlotte Church (who duets with Groban on "The Prayer" here). Groban has a rich voice that falls somewhere between a low tenor and a high baritone, and Foster has here crafted or commissioned music that will sound classical to the ears of non-classical fans, much of it with lyrics in Italian to complete the effect. "Gira con Me," for example, is a slow ballad that sounds like it may have escaped from a minor opera, but in fact was composed by Foster and songwriter/producer Walter Afanasieff (best-known for his work with Mariah Carey). Groban is also given some ballads in English, with songwriting credits that include such Southern California pop-meisters as Richard Marx, Albert Hammond, Carole Bayer Sager, and Foster's wife, Linda Thompson. The result is an ersatz classical crossover record that won't fool the experts but easily could find its way into households that welcome Celine Dion and other sub-operatic emoters of her ilk. Groban is certainly not to be blamed for taking his chances with Foster instead of staying in college or pursuing a classical career, and his first album is enjoyable even if it doesn't live up to its pretensions. ~ William Ruhlmann Josh Groban's meteoric rise to stardom began when hit producer David Foster selected him as a last-minute replacement at the dress rehearsal for the 1999 Grammy Awards, where the then-17-year-old singer stood in for Andrea Bocelli in a duet with Celine Dion. The rest, as they say, is history. But can the precocious baritone truly compete with the more seasoned powerhouses of the Classical Crossover scene? Groban's self-titled debut album validates Foster's prescience and proves that the young vocalist is more than able to hold his own. Angelic Voice! Josh Groban's soaring voice is wonderful to hear. Since I've seen him live recently in Omaha and know what a sweet, down-to-earth person he is, it makes his incredible talent even more awesome. Loved this cd! Submitted by Hazel (Omaha, NE, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Voice of An Angel-Uplifting Music Very uplifting music. I don't always like opera style music, but Josh has a way of singing that all of us can relate to. It's so nice to have uplifting music when there is so much of the opposite out there. I listen to his music while I workout at the Gym. I recommend it to everyone. Josh has a truly gifted voice. Many can sing, but not all are as gifted. Thanks for providing such wonderful music.
Sincerely,
Melanie K. Submitted by mkalliainen (Bonney Lake, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Just beginning... Josh Groban has got to be the youngest, most wonderful singer of our time! I place him right up there with the three tenors, whom I absolutely love!! I heard his singing only once and went straight to the computer to find out where I could find his music. He is absolutely fabulous...I would like to hear him sing live.... Josh Groban
$7.59 DUETS is a compilation of duets and contains a new duet recording with Barry Manilow, "I Won't Be The One Let Go". Personnel includes: Barbra Streisand, Barry Manilow, Barry Gibb, Neil Diamond, Bryan Adams, Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Celine Dion, Donna Summer, Johnny Mathis, Kris Kristofferson, Kim Carnes, Don Johnson, Vince Gill, Michael Crawford, Judy Garland, Harold Arlen, Josh Groban. Producers include: Walter Afanasieff, Richard Marx, Barry Gibb, Albhy Galuten, David Foster. Recorded between 1966 & 2002. In her lengthy career, Barbra Streisand has never shown much inclination to share the spotlight. In the movies, she must endure a leading man, but in her recordings, she has gone it alone for the most part. In 1978, however, a disc jockey edited together her and Neil Diamond's recordings of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers," and she and Diamond quickly cut a real duet, resulting in a number one hit. Thereafter, she cannily coaxed others into sharing the microphone, resulting in chart singles with Donna Summer, Barry Gibb, Kim Carnes, former boyfriend Don Johnson, Bryan Adams, and Celine Dion, and album tracks with Johnny Mathis, Michael Crawford, and Vince Gill. The material mostly consisted of mediocre adult contemporary ballads that were outshone by the star power of the ...

| | Josh Groban Live At The Greek CDs (2004) Includes bonus DVD
Josh Groban
$22.05 This 2004 PBS Great Performances special, taped at L.A.s Greek Theater, will be broadcast during he holiday season. Bela Fleck appears as guest artist. DVD features include Dolby Stereo 2.0, Dolby 5.1 Surround, and DTS. The DVD also features behind the scenes footage. The set is available in jewel case or amaray packaging.
Package includes bonus DVD. Personnel: Béla Fleck. Josh Groban's first filmed concert performance for PBS was a great success when aired during the station's pledge drives and the resulting DVD became a best seller. Therefore, it was not surprising that PBS wanted a follow-up, especially after Groban's second disc, Closer, became a number one hit. The final show of Groban's Closer tour at the Greek Amphitheater in Los Angeles was selected for the project, and after airing on PBS, the concert was packaged as a CD/DVD combo. Although Live at the Greek is an enticing product for any Groban fan, it does have one drawback (as did his first DVD) in that the CD version of the concert only features eight of the DVD's 17 performances. This poses a problem for anyone who simply wants to listen to the concert, especially when two of his most popular songs, "To Where You Are" and "You Raise Me Up," are missing from the CD. However, people will most likely be drawn to the DVD to begin with, so the lack of material on the CD is not a huge detriment -- just an annoyance. Unlike his first filmed concert that was more of a formal ...

| | Tim Easton Special 20 CD (1998)
Josh Groban
$10.75 Personnel: Tim Easton (vocals, acoustic 6- & 12-string guitars, electric guitar); Sean Beal (vocals, guitar, baritone guitar, accordion); Phillip Park (slide guitar); Al Perkins (pedal steel guitar, dobro, banjo); Tramp (mandolin); Teresa Fyfe (violin); Jim Hoke (bass harmonica); Brad Jones (Hammond B-3 organ, harmonium, bass, glockenspiel); Matt Surgeson (bass); Mickey Grimm (drums, washboard, oil can, percussion, loops); Ross Rice (drums); Justing Crooks (snare drum, foot stomp); Robin Eaton (chime); Annie Light-Brown, Clare Surgeson (background vocals). Recorded at Alex The Great Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Following the release of The Truth About Us and Break Your Mother's Heart by Tim Easton, New West decided to re-release his 1998 debut, Special 20. Originally self-released on the Heathen label, the album represents the first flowering of a folk-roots singer\songwriter. One need only listen to a few songs to realize that Easton isn't the typical singer/songwriter with too many things to say or the typical roots rocker with more attitude than chops. The opener, "Just Like Home," is a surrealistic dream where "movie stars and drag queens are draggin' me to the poor farm." But the song works so well because it's also a fine rocker, which makes it a lot more fun than a Robert Earl Keen party song. The title track, on the other hand, delves into folk-country, relying on an odd percussion loop and Dobro to create a fresh roots sound. While the folk-based guitar songs eventually outnumber the rockers, the charm of Special 20 is its ability to mix up the arrangements and pacing over the ten selections, an approach that keeps the album interesting all the way through to "Rewind," the last track. For Easton fans, this reissue will offer a satisfying backward glance; for the alternative country crowd, Special 20 serves as a good example of how to mix electric and acoustic guitars without ever sounding like a cliché. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr. SPECIAL 20, named after a favored harmonica, is the first solo release from Haynes Boys frontman Tim Easton. Easton makes it clear ...

Josh Groban
$11.19 Personnel: Sandy Ewen (vocals, guitar, accordion); Aaron Russell (vocals, guitar, bass guitar); Nick Hennies (vocals, drums, percussion). Audio Mixer: Alex Keller. Audio Remasterer: Alex Keller. Recording information: Home (02/2007-08/2007). For their third album, the Weird Weeds find themselves in their brightest spot yet musically -- it's not that their earlier efforts are dark downers per se, but from the flair of the opening drum roll and sweet blended vocals of Sandy Ewen and Aaron Russell on "You Drive Me Crazy," it's as if the trio members took their gently unsettled psych backgrounds and thought, "Let's play to the crowd some." The short 14-song effort therefore works as both a stand-alone listen and an interesting step forward, a forthright, almost brawling album at points (consider the abbreviated instrumental blast of "Save the Dogs") that still has an air of understated mystery and fragmentation, songs that are just as long as they need to be but no more. A song like "Lies" captures the balance at play excellently, the feedback scraping (and not much else) of the verses contrasted with a surging, near-triumphant chorus, even while a crackle of nervous noise continues to play under the measured full-band rollick. That interplay between the three players is something you can almost sense from their work -- Nick Hennies' drumming in particular is a marvel of deftness, with his fills and additions around silent arrangements as important as a full crash and bash, as can be heard on both "A Goose" and "Hold in the Light," the latter featuring a ...
